Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report and to regulate the users’ documentary necessities of six Mexican universities involved, in a cooperative manner and during the period of confinement by SARS-CoV-2, through the Document Delivery Service (DDS). Design/methodology/approach A diagnostic was conducted within the participating institutions that considered the information resources and sources, documents requested and the number of users per institution, which were counted daily for one month. This research used documentary and quantitative methods. Findings The authors determined that DDS is a reliable service for information supply although it is going to be necessary to adjust legal schemes and interlibrary loan policies to develop a process and to adapt this one to the current information services in the future or “in our new normality”; DDS will have a high impact on the conformation of networks of librarian cooperation. Originality/value This study exposed the importance of DDS as a relevant service to provide information on demand by using information and communication technologies, which is a safe way to operate, avoiding exposure to physical contact, ensuring the continuity of research processes in the communities and always monitoring and promoting the copyright.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze to what extent the strategic actions implemented by the libraries contribute to the containment of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, without compromising the quality of library services for their learning communities. Design/methodology/approach The research has a mixed methodology: qualitative and quantitative with a technique of documentary review and statistical analysis of data through FanPage Karma software. The documents are public and are part of the teaching programs of the universities, webinars and courses given through accounts and official sites of the Mexican Federal Government, social networks, as well as groups of experts in national and international librarianship. Findings The research documents and describes the library services that have emerged in libraries since the quarantine and isolation period established by the Ministry of Public Education. It also shows the strategic actions adopted by universities (their advantages and disadvantages) and the digital competencies of the library professionals to meet the information demands of their communities. Additionally, actions implemented to provide a rapid response are discussed so that they can later be improved to have a comprehensive framework for improving quality in the remote library service. Originality/value This research contributes value to the field by critically analyzing libraries’ distance services, their innovations and the necessary professional competences required to achieve the institutional academic goals. Additionally, relevant services in the digital context are described.
The purpose of this chapter is to review the literature on green buildings and the BIM model to see in which aspects of the sustainable library this technology can be implemented in to identify areas of opportunity to introduce the BIM model in green libraries. It is important to note that a search in major databases such as Scopus and Web of Science has identified a considerable number of academic papers that talk about green libraries, green buildings, BIM model, and BIM model in green buildings; however, there is still no literature on green libraries using green BIM. In this sense, the chapter offers the current view on green buildings, green libraries, and BIM model and the possible future implications of the use of technology and BIM model in libraries to increase processes, reduce margins of error in construction, costs, and waste of resources. The present research opens a wide range of possibilities for information exchange and opportunities for green library construction and remodeling, especially in developing countries.
Objetivo: Analizar cuáles son los servicios bibliotecarios y las aplicaciones (apps) que se están utilizando dentro de las bibliotecas académicas de las Instituciones de Educación Superior adscritas al Consejo Nacional para Asuntos Bibliotecarios de las Instituciones de Educación Superior (CONPAB-IES, A. C.) de México. Método: Se realizó una revisión de la literatura en bases de datos y revistas especializadas en Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información con ayuda de los recursos digitales de la Dirección General de Bibliotecas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Resultados y conclusiones: El desarrollo de apps y servicios bibliotecarios dispositivos móviles en bibliotecas académicas de las Instituciones de Educación Superior, adscritas al CONPAB-IES, A. C., muestra una tendencia por el desarrollo de colecciones digitales en formatos amigables para PC y laptop, a diferencia de smartphones y tablets.
This study analyses the techniques and procedures that were developed and the changes that took place in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP), both in Mexico, and the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), in the United States of America. To face the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, librarians in these institutions improved their Information Literacy (IL) and Media Information Literacy (MIL) programmes. Design / methodology / approach This study has a mixed methodology with a comparative analysis. For this purpose, data shows the universities’ contexts: the communities of students, teachers, researchers, and librarians, and the e-learning strategies of IL and MIL programmes. Findings As part of the results of the crowdsourcing collaboration between the UMD, UNAM and BUAP, the study shows the different online learning communities and their innovations. Originality Although there is theoretical knowledge about IL and MIL in Mexican universities and University of Minnesota Duluth, the e-learning strategies used by their librarians in this document sought to provide technical solutions and other options for a virtual work scheme that responded to the specific problems presented by COVID-19. In this case, the framework for creating online library services was designed by their librarians for their communities in the context of the current crisis, even when online services had already been established for more than ten years. Research limitations / implications The technological infrastructure, the professionalisation of the library staff and a lack of knowledge of the new virtual teaching-learning needs. Practical implications Analysis of tools for virtual teaching-learning services, description of strategies used by library staff, results and feedback. Social implications IL and MIL strategies created in a variety of contexts can be enhanced by library collaboration in a fully virtual setting. Libraries with better technological infrastructure play a decisive role.
