Both nitrogen and sulphur are important macronutrients necessary for the proper development and yield of soybean. Moreover, sulphur plays a special role in nitrogen metabolism in the plant, and sulphur deficiency leads to a reduction in the utilization of nitrogen from fertilizer. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of nitrogen and sulphur application on the yield and quality traits of soybean seeds. The following factors were analyzed in the experiment: I. Nitrogen application rate: 0, 30 and 60 kg ha−1 applied at different times (before sowing and/or at the start of the seed filling stage); II. Sulphur application rate: 0 and 40 kg ha−1 applied in two portions: half during the development of lateral shoots and half at the start of flowering. Thus the 14 fertilizer combinations were obtained. Result show that the highest seeds yield was obtained in the combinations with 60 kg N applied ½ before sowing + ½ after emergence (BBCH 73-75) and ¾ before sowing +¼ after emergence. In these combinations, sulphur did not significantly affect seed yield. In the remaining nitrogen application, sulphur application significantly increased the seed yield. Taking into account the yield and the chemical composition of the soybean seeds, fertilization with 60 kg N ha−1 in two portions can be recommended—½ or ¾ before sowing and the remainder during the development of pods and seeds—in combination with sulphur application.
Recent years have seen a significant increase in weather anomalies in Central Europe (51°22′ N, 22°64′ E), which makes it more difficult to predict yields of winter wheat and to estimate prices on world exchanges. Eight-year (2007–2015) field observations of winter wheat cv. Turnia were carried out in order to determine the relationship between selected meteorological indicators (e.g., the values of average daily air temperature, daily sums of precipitation, and the number of days with precipitation) and the biometric traits and seed yield of winter wheat. In addition, an attempt was made to identify the meteorological parameters that determine an increase in stem elongation during the growing season. The relationship between yield parameters and biometric parameters was evaluated using Spearman’s non-parametric correlation coefficients. The regression models for analysis of the dependence of yield parameters and biometric parameters on meteorological elements (temperature, precipitation totals, and days with precipitation) in each development period was used. The study showed that from the beginning of vegetative growth to the flowering stage, growth and development were most advanced in plants for which the average temperature was about 8–9 °C, and the number of days with precipitation was about 41. During generative growth, spike length is 80% determined by the precipitation total. Grain weight is 68% negatively determined by the temperature during dormancy (the higher the temperature during dormancy, the lower the weight of the kernel). A positive relationship was shown between yield and the precipitation total during the period from sowing to the onset of dormancy (r = 0.37). Winter wheat yield was 69% dependent on the density at harvest (the greater the density, the higher the final yield). On the basis of the 8-year results of the study, we conclude that the weather is highly variable from year to year, and therefore breeders should direct their research towards creating variants with much greater plasticity and high tolerance for unfavourable weather patterns.
Zaobserwowano tendencję wzrostową średniej rocznej temperatury powietrza wynoszącą 0,5°C/10 lat, a jednocześnie spadek liczby przymrozków wysokich w tempie –1,4/10 lat oraz przymrozków niskich o –2,4/10 lat.
The aim of the experiment was to assess the effect of cropping system and as well as various methods of weed control on the biodiversity of the weed community of dent maize, narrow-leaved lupine and spring oat. The data used in the study came from a three year field experiment carried out at the Experimental Station in south-eastern Poland (50°42'N, 23°16'E). The following factors were studied: 1. Cropping system – sole cropping and strip intercropping; 2. Weed control – mechanical and chemical. Changes in the diversity of the segetal flora are analysed using the species richness index (S), the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’), the Margalef index (R), the Simpson dominance index (D) and Pielou’s evenness index (J’). The use of chemical weed control increased the diversity of the weed community in all species tested compared to mechanical weed regulation. Chemical weed regulation significantly decreased the value of Simpson dominance index due to the limitation of the occurrence of dominant weed species. Strip intercropping increased weed biodiversity, however, the influence of cropping systems depended on the crop species and the weed controlmethod used.
This study concerns the microclimatic conditions in two historic churches of the temperate climatic zone located in Lublin, Poland: Lublin Cathedral and Post-Bridgettines Church, having regard to their underground crypts. The measurements of the air temperature and RH lasted all 2016 and were compared with optimal heritage protection values included, interalia, in American instruction ASHRAE Handbook. Furthermore, for both buildings the historic climate was calculated, based on the European Standard EN 15757:2010, and the target ranges were specified.
