The positive effects of health education and healthy lifestyle on adolescent academic achievement cannot be over emphasized as learning experiences to help students accurately assess the level of risk-taking behaviour among their peers, emphasis on the value of good health that reinforces health-enhancing attitudes and beliefs are paramount. Little effort had been made by researchers to examine the influence of health education and healthy lifestyle on students' academic achievement. This study examined the influence of health education and healthy lifestyle on students' academic achievement in Biology. Seven hundred and twenty (720) students of both sexes participated in the study. Three instruments used in the study are Health Education Efficiency Questionnaire (α=0.89), Adolescent Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire (α=0.94) and Biology Achievement Test (r=0.88). Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics of Multiple Regression at p<0.05. The result showed that three independent variables were found to have significant relative prediction on students' achievement. Health Education, β = -0.097, t (715) = 2.102, p<0.05, Risk Behaviour, β = 0.011, t (715) = 0.241, p<0.05 and Value for good Health, β = -0.138, t (715), = 3.843, p<0.05. It is therefore recommended that health education should be made mandatory for all students in the secondary school to enable them form and develop a healthy lifestyle.
The growing popularity and consideration of social networking sites having the ability to enhance interaction, academic participation and performance among lecturers and students respectively underscored an investigation into the influence of social media and environmental factors on academic performance of student nurses in Southwest Nigeria. The study is a survey design that adopted correlational research type. The population comprised all Student Nurses in all the Nursing Schools in Southwest Nigeria. Six schools purposively selected and a sample of 300 students randomly selected participated in the study. Two instruments: Social Media and Environmental Factor Questionnaire (SMEFQ) r=0.85 and Student Nurses Achievement Test (SNAT), r=0.72 was used to collect data. Three research questions guided the study and data collected was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result revealed that the three predictor variables correlated with each other in predicting students’ academic achievement. It also showed that Facebook ß = (-.162), t(-1.436) = .155, p>.005 contributed most among the predictor variables while the two predictors (social media and environmental factors) could not predict students academic performance in Nursing (F(2,77) =1.214, P= 0.303). It is recommended that students be encouraged to use social media adequately for academic purposes while government improve school physical structures and provide conducive learning environment for academic excellence.
Research into investigation of the relationship between multiple intelligences of learners and academic performance is germane. This study investigated relationship between multiple intelligences of higher degree students and academic performance. Two research questions and three hypotheses guided the correlational study. Three hundred and thirty Master degree students of the University of Ibadan who are randomly selected made the sample. Three validated instruments: Simple Multiple Intelligence Inventory developed by Gardner (r=0.89), Modified MILHDSQ (r=0.87) and the CGPA of students result for the two semesters was used to collect data that was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The result reveals a very high level of multiple intelligences in the overall mean of 4.34. Students demonstrated very much high intelligence in Logical-mathematical (Xw=4.82), interpersonal (Xw=4.57) and visual (Xw=4.53). Both logical (8.143<0.05) and intrapersonal (19.252<0.05) intelligences are related to academic performance. Moreover, academic performance has high correlation with Logical (0.72) and Linguistic (0.61). This shows a positive correlation between multiple intelligences and academic performance. The result provided opportunity for lecturers’ awareness to observe level of multiple intelligences of students for better guidance to improve academic performance. It is recommended that teaching strategies that will accommodate multiple intelligences be designed by education stakeholders.
Adolescence is a period of life that is characterized by dramatic changes in biological processes in physical and social contexts. The period can be demanding and challenging because adolescents are preoccupied with self-identity, self-image and acceptability in the society as well as selfawareness since the action to be taken is a big part of person's life in the future particularly on whether or not to engage in premarital sexual intercourse. This study investigated factors that induce adolescents to engage in premarital sexual intercourse among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study was guided by three research questions and one hypothesis and adopted survey research design. Multistage sampling technique was used to sample 600 students from all the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. One instrument with reliability coefficient of 0.79 was used for data collection. Descriptive and Inferential statistics was used to analyze the data collected. Finding shows that previous sexual abuse experience (75%) was the most potent factor that induces premarital sexual intercourse and four of the of the independent variables showed significant contribution to the dependent variable: previous sexual abuse experience (β = .290, p<.05), smoking of prohibited drugs (β =-.345, p<.05), peer influence (β = .225, p<.05), poor housing condition (β = .126, p<.05). It was recommended that adolescents should avoid engaging in premarital sexual intercourse and reduce curiosity about sex.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
