I have noticed that of late years in this Section there has been a tendency to neglect the practical side of our calling, papers on tooth filling, research on materials, and on prosthetics being conspicuous by their absence. I submit that these subjects are as important as many others which we discuss here, and should not be neglected.I think that our programme for each Session should include a paper, or, still better, a demonstration of a technical nature, either in operative dental work, prosthetics or orthodontics. Thomas's, which was founded in 1553 by monks, and was named after St. Thomas of London and of Canterbury. At the end of the seventeenth century, one of the governors of that hospital was Thomas Guy (Wilks and Bettany, IBg2), a bookseller and publisher in the City of London (Fig. I).
