ResumoVárias ações, seja no âmbito político, seja no econômico, vêm sendo realizadas no Brasil visando promover a inovação tecnológica. Um dos caminhos necessários para se atingir esse objetivo é a divulgação dos resultados de pesquisas passíveis de serem protegidas: as patentes. Além de fonte de informação tecnológica, a patente também pode ser entendida como importante instrumento de divulgação científi ca. O presente artigo objetiva o estudo da patente como ferramenta de divulgação científi ca visando explorar seu potencial na disseminação da ciência, contribuindo, assim, para a divulgação de pesquisa científi ca e sua transformação em tecnologia a serviço da sociedade. Para isso serão abordados os requisitos necessários para a proteção da patente, suas dimensões e a relação com os critérios de noticiabilidade. AbstractSeveral actions, both in the political and in the economic scope, are being held Brazil in order to promote technological innovation. One of the paths which are required to achieve this objective is the dissemination of research results which are liable to be protected: patents. Besides the fact that it is a source of technological information, patents may also be understood as an important instrument of science dissemination. This article aims to study patents as tools for scientifi c dissemination, and also aims to explore their potential in such dissemination thus contributing to divulging scientifi c research and its transformation into technology, at the service of society. In order to achieve these aims, the necessary requirements for patent protection, its dimensions and its relationship with the criteria of newsworthiness are addressed.
