Introduction: Use of blood means providing the right blood product, in the right quantity, for the right patient. It can help in bridging the gap between demand and supply of the precious blood or blood products.
Background: ABO and Rh blood group antigens are inherited traits ,located on chromosome 1 and19. They are usually not altered throughout the life of an individual. Blood grouping consists of forward grouping and reverse grouping and both procedures should match with each other. A blood group discrepancy exists when results of forward grouping and reverse grouping do not match each other. ABO and Rh blood group discrepancy should be resolved before transfusion and blood group to be properly labeled to prevent transfusion reaction.
Methods: A prospective study was carried out in Department of Transfusion Medicine and Blood Bank , National Institute of Kidney Diseases & Urology (NIKDU), Dhaka Bangladesh from January 2014 to Dcember-2016. Total 50 blood samples from SLE patients were included in the study . The ABO and Rh D typing was done by tube technique using monoclonal IgM (oeShield Diagnostic ,UK) Anti-A, Anti-B, Anti-AB and pooled A, B and O cell and Anti-D.
Results: A total of 50 blood group testing were done where we found 50 blood group discrepancies with overall frequency was 100% and transfused safely.
Conclusion: Any discrepancy between forward and reverse blood grouping methods should be resolved before transfusion of blood components.

Hepatitis viral infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality in haemodialysis patients. The present study was undertaken to estimate the prevalence of HBV and HCV and dual infection among haemodialysis patients attending at National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology (NIKDU), Sher EBangla Nagar, Dhaka during the period between January 2012 to April 2013. One hundred and fifty patients attending haemodialysis unit were screened for the presence of HBV and HCV infections. 22 (14.67%) patients were HCV positive while 18 (12%) patients had HBV infection. A dual infection with both the viruses was observed in 1 patient (.67%).Bangladesh J Medicine Jul 2014; 25 (2) : 55-60
Landsteiner discovered ABO blood group system. It is most important for transfusion medicine. Blood group A has several subtypes and most important are A1 and A2, upon which further groups of A and AB have been classified as A1, A2 and A1B, A2B. Of individuals with A antigen, approximately 20% belong to A2 while rest 80% belong to A1. Anti-A1 Lectin, a cold agglutinin which destroys A1 cells is clinically significant when they react at 37°C, causing transfusion reactions.
