Drugs of traditional system of medicine including Unani and Ayurveda are recommended and used in various diseases since long. These drugs are mainly derived from herbs and plants. Neem is a pre-eminent and a sacred gift of nature. This tree is still regarded as “Wonder tree”, “Nature’s drug store”, “Divine tree”, “Heal all”, “Materia medica”, “Panacea of all diseases” and “Village dispensary” also considered as “An ancient cure for modern world”. In Unani System of Medicine (USM) it is widely used as antiinfective agent in various skin diseases (Amrāḍ-i Jild) such as leprosy, syphilis, tinea, itching and in ulcers. It is very effective in painful menses and dysmenorrhea, chronic joint pain, constipation, intestinal warm (Kirm-i Shikam) and also prefer in the killing of head lices, diabetes and rheumatic arthritis. This study is based on a comprehensive analysis of related articles published in journals using the phrases "Neem or Azadirachta indica ", "Neem research paper", "Neem and Unani Medicine" and "Neem used in traditional medicine" in electronic searches of the PubMed, SCOPUS, Google Scholar advanced search and AYUSH Research Portal. The evidence based scientific and clinical studies reported in the present review confirming the therapeutic efficacy of Azadirachta indica (Neem). Biological active phytoconstituents of Neem also indicate that it may serve as very effective natural medicine in different disease. In this aspect, further in vitro and in vivo studies are needed in respect to explore the recommendations of USM as well as other traditional system of medicines in term of the extensive therapeutic values of Azadirachta indica.
Buthūr Labaniyya (Acne vulgaris) is one of the oldest and commonest dermatological problem, which are known since antiquity and it has been called by different names in different parts of the world. It is a disorder of pilosebaceous unit which mainly affects the peripubertal population and clinically manifests as comedones (open/closed), papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts and heals with scars. As per Unani classics, Buthūr Labaniyya (Acne vulgaris) is termed as Muhāsā or Kīl characterised by small, white eruptions on the nose and cheeks, which resemble a condensed milk drop. Renowned Unani physicians Zakariyya Rāzī, Ibn Hubal, Ibn sīnā, Dā’ūd Antāki and Hakīm Akbar Arzānī have stated that, it is a dermatological disorder of adolescents that present as whitish eruptions over the face caused by M’ādda Sadīdiya (Suppurative material) or preponderance of Ghalīz (filthy) M’ādda Balghamiyya. Acne vulgaris affected 681.2 million people worldwide in 2016. This was a 10% rise from 612 million in 2006. Acne ranks eighth on the list of the world's most common diseases (9.4%) in 2010, with a worldwide prevalence of 645 million. In Unani Medicine, Buthūr Labaniyya (Acne vulgaris) is a well recognize disease entity and has been treated successfully since antiquity with various single and compound drugs having Jāli (Detergent), Muhalil (Resolvent) and Mujaffif (Desiccative), Musaffi-i Khūn advia properties. In this review, we tried to compile all the available information till date from both unani and other published scientific papers and textbooks which will fruitful for further research.
Berberis aristata DC. (Rasaut) is a frequently used herbal drug in Unani and other traditional system of medicine. It is an erect spinous and deciduous evergreen shrub belonging to the family Berberidaceae. It contains mainly berberine alkaloids which is well known for isoquinoline, that is commonly used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and also used as an antibiotic agent. In Unani System of Medicine (USM) it is externally used in hot temperament inflammations, Otorrhea, pharyngitis, conjunctivitis and many of eye diseases viz Stye, Blepharitis, Epiphora, eyes itching etc. while internally used in bleeding piles, intestinal ulcers, various skin diseases alone and with other blood purifier drugs, ophthalmia, melasma, paronychia, hemorrhage, herpes, eczema, hemoptysis, splenomegaly, diarrhea, malaria, intestinal ulcers, diphtheria, dysentery, chronic leucorrhea, pruritus ani, anal fissures, menorrhagia and jaundice. Different type of active phytoconstituents have also been evaluated from Rasaut which includes alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, saponins, steroids, E-caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, carbohydrate, volatile oils, fixed oils and fats. The present work is based on search available about review and analysis of related articles published in various reputed journals using the phrases “Rasaut or Berberis aristata”, “Rasaut and Unani Medicine” “Rasaut research paper”, and “Rasaut used in traditional medicine” in electronic searches of the Google Scholar advanced search, PubMed, Scopus, ResearchGate, Web of Science and AYUSH Research Portal etc.In this review, it is tried to compiled all the available information till date from both Unani and other published scientific papers and textbooks regarding the therapeutic properties, pharmacological activities and traditional values of Berberis aristata, which will be fruitful for researchers to design further in vitro and in vivo scientific studies to explore the more medicinal values along with biomolecules of Berberis aristata DC.
