Background: This longitudinal descriptive study was conducted for the first time in the department of Pathology, Rajshahi Medical College in order to evaluate the prognostic significance of serum TgAb as a tumor marker for differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Objective: The aim of this study to detect the antibody positive differentiated thyroid carcinoma using serum TgAb and compare with the FNAC and histopathological findings. Method: A total forty patients of clinically, radiologically and by FNAC diagnosed as differentiated thyroid carcinoma were selected attending in the department of Otolaryngology, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital from January 2010 to December 2011. Preoperative serum TgAb level (TgAbl) was measured in all patients taking cut off value as 40 IU/ml. Biopsy material were examined for histopathological diagnosis. 3-6 months after thyroidectomy postoperative serum TgAb level (TgAb2) was measured in those patients only who were TgAbl positive. Result: The correlation, association and statistical analysis of preoperative and postoperative serum TgAb level were computed against histopathological diagnosis. Out of forty cases, 35 were papillary and 5 were follicular carcinoma. Mean age was 25.48+9.70 years and Male: Female was 1:6. In this study, 9 cases (22.5%) were TgAb positive preoperatively and 2 cases showed highest level 3000 and 2200 IU/ml. Post operative TgAb level of 9 cases showed significant reduction. Statistical analysis demonstrates significant correlation (P=<0.01) and association (P=<0.05) between preoperative and postoperative TgAb level. Conclusion: So, it is concluded that serum TgAb level can be used as a tumor marker in antibody positive differentiated thyroid carcinoma.
Original Research Article Introduction: Like many other countries in the world cancer in Bangladesh is one of the major killer diseases. Along with many other countries, Bangladesh has an increasing number of cancers, primarily because of cigarette smoking, chewing of betel nut/betel leaf and exposure to several oncogenic microorganisms and other carcinogens ubiquitous and also for coupled with lack of screening, awareness and poor health seeking behaviors associated with poverty, malnutrition, and illiteracy. Aim of the study: To assess the risk of smoking in patients with malignant tumor.
Original Research Article Introduction: Cancer is a major health challenge all over the world. It has devastating effect on individual, family and society. The number of cancer deaths worldwide has been considered to be about 4 million each year. An estimated 12.66 million people were diagnosed with cancer across the world in 2008, and 7.56 million people died from the disease. During the past century, cancer has emerged as the most challenging problems for public health systems in medium-and low-resource countries.
Background: In modern urology, successful male urethral reconstruction poses a continuing challenge. Methods: It was a quasi-experimental study conducted in the department of urology, Dhaka medical college hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh between January 2010 to December 2011. 35 patients having bulbar urethral strictures admitted in the department were study participants. All the participants underwent unilateral urethral mobilization, for buccal mucosa graft urethroplasty and followed up at least six months. RGU and MCU was done when peak flow was <15 ml /sec in uroflowmetry. Urethroscopy was done at 3rd and 6th month. The statistics used to analyze the data were descriptive statistics, and the tests done were student’s t-test, chi-square test, ANOVA, and Fisher exact test. Results: The length of strictures was observed ≤3 cm among 31% (n=11) and >3 cm among 69% (n=24) patients. As the immediate postoperative outcome among the participants, we found the mean peak urinary flow rate (Qmax), 15.3±1.2 and voided urine volume (ml), 328.8±50. Finally, as the postoperative outcome after 6 months among the participants, we found the mean peak urinary flow rate (Qmax), 24.2±2.9; voided urine volume (ml), 330.8±50.1 and PVR (ml), 11.6±3.3. In this study, some potential complications were bleeding and wound infection which were found among 11.43% and 17.14% patients respectively. Conclusions: Considering the satisfactory outcomes and lower complications unilateral urethral mobilization procedure can be considered as an effective treatment method for the management of bulbar urethral stricture.
