Background: Services for adolescents are highly fragmented, poorly coordinated and uneven in quality. Adolescent-friendly services (AFHS) should be able to attract young people, meet their needs comfortably and with sensitivity, and retain young clients for continuing care. With this background, the present study was carried out to study the implementation status of Adolescent friendly health services and to determine compliance with quality standards. Methods: Present cross sectional study was carried out at 10 Urban Health Centers of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Study population comprised of adolescents (10 to 19 years). All adolescents aged 10 to 19 years (n=99) and all health care providers present at the time of visit at the facility were interviewed. Data was collected using WHO quality measurement tools. Data was analyzed using WHO scoring sheet for data analysis. Results: Relative score for confidentiality, privacy, equitability, accessibility and knowledge gap in adolescent is 58.3%. Relative score for health care providers’ competencies to work with adolescents and to provide them with required services is 42.6%. Relative score for Observation tool used for facility inventory is 45.6%. Overall relative score is 47.3% of maximum possible score. Conclusions:As the score is near to the lower limit of class interval of 40% to 80%, it implies need of improvement.
Background:Complications during pregnancy and childbirth remain a leading cause of illness and death among women of reproductive age in India. In the recent years, the concept of the WHO maternal near miss (MNM) has been adopted by the tertiary level hospitals as it has an added advantage of offering a large number of cases for intervention and for the evaluation of the maternal healthcare being provided by the health-care system.Materials and Methods:In the present study, near miss criterion-based audit of MNM cases and maternal death (MD) cases, based on the WHO near miss approach and MD, was conducted from the record section of the four tertiary level hospitals. In the present study, the WHO MNM approach was adopted to assess the quality of maternal healthcare in tertiary level hospitals. Retrospective secondary data analysis from the records of record section and maternity wards pertaining to June 2015–May 2016, of the hospitals of Ahmedabad city, was conducted from January 2016 to November 2017.Results:The total number of live births of all the four hospitals under surveillance was 21,491. Severe maternal outcome cases were 326, of which 247 (75.8%) were of MNM cases and 79 (24.2%) were of MD. MNM mortality ratio was found to be 3.13:1. Eclampsia (29.45%) followed by preeclampsia (25.46%) and severe postpartum hemorrhage (22.39%) were the leading causes of potentially life-threatening conditions. Conclusion:Above finding suggests the development of a comprehensive framework for the assessment of MNM and further improvement in the quality of maternal health care.
Background: Rabies is a deadly zoonotic disease and most often transmitted to humans through a dog bite. It is 100% fatal yet 100% preventable with timely and appropriate Post Exposure treatment. There are myths associated with a dog bite and rabies and which might affect the health seeking behaviour. The objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge and misconceptions regarding dog-bite and rabies in primary school teachers and to know the association of misconceptions with health seeking behaviour for dog-bite in the study group. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 196 teachers of municipality and self-finance primary schools in Ahmedabad city. A pre-tested and pre-designed questionnaire was used to collect data of knowledge & attitude regarding dog-bite/rabies. Results: Out of 196 teachers, 118 teachers will not take ARV injection after bite of a normal looking dog. Many of them have a misconception about ARV injection. 128 teachers will discontinue ARV after a dog bite if any symptoms of Rabies will not develop within 10 days after starting ARV. There is an association found between knowledge regarding rabies and treatment seeking behaviour which was found statistically significant. Conclusions: There is a serious gap in knowledge regarding Rabies in primary school teachers and misconceptions regarding rabies are rampant in most of them. The misconceptions regarding rabies and dog bite found to be affecting the treatment seeking behaviour after dog bite which leads to low compliance to ARV.
Background: Nosocomial infection is also called as 'Hospital Acquired- Infection’. It can be defined as an infection whose development is favoured by a hospital environment, such as one acquired by a patient during a hospital visit or one developing among hospital staff. The nosocomial infection rate is alarming and is estimated at about 30-35 percent of all hospital admissions. Many lives are lost because of the spread of infections in hospitals. Nosocomial infections are important contributors for morbidity and mortality. They became more important public health problem with increasing economic and human impact. Aims and objective: To assess the knowledge and practice of the staff nurses working in surgical unit of civil hospital Ahmedabad before and after the administration of self-instruction module on prevention of control of nosocomial infection (HAIs). To find co-relation between pre-test knowledge and post-test knowledge. Material and Methods: This study was conducted using the quasi experimental research approach and research design used was one group pre and post test.30 staff nurses working in surgical unit of civil hospital Ahmedabad are selected by convenient sampling method. Collection tool used on staff nurse was structured knowledge questionnaire and observational checklist Results: findings revealed that majority of sample (46.66%) were in the age between 21 to 30 years. According to qualification highest percentages (43.33%) belong to G.N.M. Majority had experience between 5 to 7 years (30%). Study findings revealed that the knowledge score of the sample show marked increase as seen in the post-test score of the experimental group indicates that the self-instructional module was effective in improving the knowledge and practice of the samples. Key words: Nosocomial infection, Prevention, control, staff nurse
