Landfill is a common solution for the final disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Turkey. Landfill siting is an extremely difficult task to accomplish because the site selection process depends on different factors and regulations. To ensure that an appropriate site is chosen, a systematic process should be developed and followed. Unsuccessful landfill siting is typically the result of strong public opposition. In this study, candidate sites for an appropriate landfill area in Cumra County of Konya City are determined by using the integration of geographic information systems (GIS) and multi-criteria evaluation (MCE). ArcGIS 9.0 software and its extensions were used as the GIS tool since it is able to perform suitability analysis using MCE analysis. To identify appropriate landfill areas in the Cumra district, eight input map layers including proximity to municipal and local wells and irrigational canals, distance from transportation routes and rails, distance from archaeological sites, distance from urban areas, land use/land cover, and land slope are used in constraint mapping. A final map was generated which identifies regions showing suitability for the location of the landfill site. According to the map, 6.8% of the study area is most suitable, 15.7% is suitable, 10.4% is moderately suitable, 25.8% is poorly suitable, and 41.3% is unsuitable. At the end of the analyses, three candidate sites are determined. The selection of the final MSW landfill site, however, requires further field research.
Web sites are media environments, which ease our life, provide rapid access to requested information, constantly updated and provide information to people who wants to be informed. As Geographical Information Systems (GIS) has developed parallel to technology and integrated to new Technologies, use of this technology has become more popular. This technology is used as GIS integration by local governments in municipality websites. GIS provide better services in local governments and used in decision making mechanisms, taxing, planning in substructure and upper structure studies and for assisting in each matter within the scope of municipality's assignment area. Web sites are tracking mechanisms which provides updated information about the municipalities they are builded for and shares plans via internet. Incompatible and unstandardized structure of municipality web sites, cause disintegration especially for GIS supported applications in mapping and prevent creating a system. First criteria in creating a website, studying applications in it and reconstruction is to define the purpose of applications and standards in design of these websites. In this study, website profiles of local governments in Turkey are studied in terms of City Guide and E-Municipality applications and comparative analyses are made. Correspondingly, similarities, differences and deficiencies are revealed. According to the required results it is concluded that data structure and web content is not of standards and it is needed to be standardized in international terms.
Soil is the one of the most important natural resources having direct and indirect effects on human life, foremost on food supply. Moreover, two of the most important sources used in many sectors such as agriculture, forestry, environment, planning, related to the conservation of soil, are soil maps and soil reports. There is a need for proper and up-todate soil maps produced with support of technology to achieve sustainable management of land and soil successfully. In order to facilitate the collection of soil data on site in a correct, fast and reliable way in soil survey and mapping studies, and therefore to produce soil maps with high accuracy, a mobile GIS application called "Soil Data System" was developed in this study to work in mobile devices which are driven by Android 5.0 and above. The developed application was tested in "Abadan Erosion Control Project" implementation area, which is located in the boundaries of Ankara, Turkey and was completed in 2016 within the General Directorate of Forestry of The Republic of Turkey, and various findings were obtained after comparing the application with classical soil survey and mapping studies. As a result of the analyzes, it was observed that Soil Data System contributed positively to soil mapping process in many aspects such as accuracy, transparency and time.
