Abstract Partial least square regression (PLSR) is a statistical modeling technique that extracts latent factors to explain both predictor and response variation. PLSR is particularly useful as a data exploration technique because it is highly flexible (e.g., there are few assumptions, variables can be highly collinear). While gaining importance across a diverse number of fields, its application in the social sciences has been limited. Here, we provide a brief introduction to PLSR, directed towards a novice audience with limited exposure to the technique; demonstrate its utility as an alternative to more classic approaches (multiple linear regression, principal component regression); and apply the technique to a hypothetical dataset using JMP statistical software (with references to SAS software).
This article provides a summary of the new Food Teacher Professional Portfolio, a 3‐year personal and professional development programme for secondary food teachers developed by the British Nutrition Foundation in partnership with the Food Teachers Centre. Included is the rationale for developing the programme; an overview of the training, support and resources provided; feedback from participants who have just completed the programme's first year; and information on forthcoming activities in 2016/2017.
The present study investigated the needs of adult education staff pertaining to adult students' mental health issues within a local school board. The study utilized mixed-methods design and was divided into progression of three separate studies. An initial focus group was conducted to identify the 12 participants' concerns and provide a direction for the needs assessment survey that was administered to the entire population of adult education teachers in the board. Two 2-hr workshops were designed for the 114 members of the staff based on the needs identified by the surveys. An evaluation of the workshops indicated that the workshops were valuable and further training was desired. By educating teachers about students who are learning in the context of mental health challenges, we will be able to provide them with the necessary tools to do their jobs more successfully and comfortably.
