Pandemic had intrigued the change of EFL learning mode in higher education. The students had to adjust to the situation that created learning challenges that might obstruct learning progress. Furthermore, students’ motivations and creativities would lead them to find alternatives. Hence, the present study was aimed to investigate the students’ challenges, motivations, and alternatives. It was a descriptive qualitative research case study by gathering students’ responses using questionnaires and interview with 10 students who joined KSP (short course) English Syntax using WhatsApp group at English Education Study Program of UIN Mataram in July 2020. The results showed that students’ motivations were increasing scores in remedy class (90%) and gaining more science understanding (10%). The challenges faced by students during the online courses were poor internet connection (50%), simultaneous agendas (30%), limited WhatsApp feature (10%), and anxiety (10%). Regarding challenges, students did alternatives such as preparing phone credits (30%), praying for the end of the pandemic (10%), learning extensively (10%), searching for the best place to get an internet signal (20%), setting alarm (10%), and creating on-going motivation (20%). The research showed that online mode learning needed adequate preparations mentally, physically, and financially to back up their learning deficiency. Keywords: Online learning; EFL; Motivations; Covid-19; Education
This study concerns about teaching writing, especially writing narrative text by using picture prompts as media. Picture prompts are believed can make the students relax to study and can encourage them to begin to write. Picture prompts have many advantages in teaching and learning writing. Related to the objective of the study, the aim of this study is to find whether picture prompts can help the students to get higher scores or not. This research will be done in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang in Arabic Language and Literature Department with the research object of class A for experimental group and class B for control group. The objective of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of using picture prompts in writing class in helping students write narrative texts. The quasi-experimental research design will be used in writing this research. This research design was chosen because it was impossible for the researcher to randomize the subjects to the intended conditions. This was due to the fact that moving the students from one class to another in order to get the ideal groups for the sake of the experiment was not allowed. As the study deals with the students of two different classes, the explanation about teaching-learning processes will be applied to it. In the processes, the researcher will conduct pretest to know the students’ writing ability before getting treatment of writing narrative using picture prompts. After the treatment, the researcher conducts posttest to compare the result and to discover whether the students get higher score or not. Then the results of the research between two subjects will be analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for The Social Science) data analysis of group pair data. The study aims at proving the effectiveness of the PQ4R and Mind-Mapping strategies in helping students to achieve higher reading comprehension score. The study involved two groups of Electrical Engineering department of UMM which were drawn using random sampling technique. The experimental group was taught using PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review) and Mind-Mapping strategies meanwhile the control group was taught using Direct Reading Activity (DRA) strategy. it was proven that PQ4R and Mind-Mapping strategies were more effective in helping students achieve higher literal comprehension score in reading since the different marginal means of post-test between control and experimental groups was 33.67 and the students were trained to be more active learners.
