Objective: To describe caregivers' feelings about alcohol abusers at hospital admission to the intensive care unit. Methods: This qualitative study included ten family caregivers of patients admitted to an intensive care unit with a diagnosis of chronic alcohol use. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews at the respondents' homes, and data were subsequently submitted to content analysis. Results: The caregivers reported suffering, sadness, desperation, and guilt. Religion appeared as a way to confront suffering, and affection by the family member was more important than the workload associated with care delivery. Conclusion: Admission of alcohol users to the intensive care unit is a difficult event for the patient's family and caregiver because it causes feelings of suffering, sadness, and guilt. The faith and religiosity of caregivers is an important supporting factor in response to the suffering caused by this experience. Objective: to characterize the profile of users intoxicated by drugs of abuse reported to a center of information and toxicological assistance and related this to the occurrence of deaths. Methods: study of case series reported in the 2010-2011 biennium after active case finding. Data were obtained from epidemiological records filed in the center and submitted to univariate analysis, with chi-squared test and Fischer test. Results: three hundred and thirty nine cases were found, most were men (87.3%), with basic education (61.0%) and elderly (37.2%). Alcohol use (83.8%) and chronic intoxications (89.9%) were predominant. Clinical complications were present in most medical diagnoses (63.4%). However, mortality was higher in the event deferral by cold and fire weapons. Conclusion: the consumption of drugs of abuse influences morbidity and mortality, particularly in men aged at 60 years or above and with low level of education.
Objective. To characterize the clinical and demographic profile of patients hospitalized due to drug intoxication at an intensive care unit (ICU) of a teaching hospital between 2004 and 2010. Methodology. In this descriptive study, information was collected from the hospitalized patients, as informed by a Toxicology Care Center (CAT) in Paraná (Brazil). The clinical files were checked and information was collected about age, gender, toxic agents and intoxication circumstances, comorbidities and clinical outcomes. Results: Sixty-two patients were included in the study, with a mean age of 58 years and 77% male. Alcohol was the substance related to most hospitalizations (77%), followed by psychoactive drugs (14%) and marihuana and crack (5% each). The main comorbidities were bronchopneumonia due to aspiration (37%), alcohol-related liver cirrhosis (24%) and traumatic brain injury (19%). The most frequent intoxication circumstances were chronic abuse (79%), attemptive suicide (19%) and acute abuse (4.9%). Thirty-nine percent of the patients died during hospitalization. Conclusion. The results show a concerning reality, as most of the patients are men of economically active age, who were intoxicated by a legal substance like alcohol, with a relevant number of deaths. Nurses need to pay particular attention to this health problem, in the context of which they play a fundamental role as educators with a view to the encouragement of healthy lifestyles.
