Gender discrimination remains problem in the world as a whole and unfortunately, nursing profession is not immune to this problem. Gender discrimination is rejection or restriction made on the basis of socially constructed gender roles which prevents a person from relishing full human rights. Role strain has been defined as when an individual is likely to experience tension in coping with the rations of dissenting roles. Role strain can occur when the men in nursing are observed by lecturers and peers to occupy a female role distinct with their masculine gender which may lead to diminishment of their individual contribution. Simple random sampling method was used to select nursing institutions that was included in the study and convenience sampling method was used to select the respondents that partook in the study. The study population is male nursing students from 200 level-500 level of the selected nursing institutions. A questionnaire including measures of gender role identity and perceived gender relevance of careers was administered to 205 male student nurses from three nursing institutions. The results showed that 32% of the respondents had not experienced gender bias during nursing school, whereas 68% reported gender bias from the lecturers and the nursing staff. This study has implications for nursing profession that address the current predicament in the nursing field caused by discrimination and social isolation that man face. Therefore, Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria should develop a strategic plan to addresses the eradication of discrimination and racism in and by the nursing profession.
The number of men in nursing has remained low despite the many benefits and opportunities associated with the profession. Currently, males make up only 6.6% of the three million nursing professionals in the United States. The study assessed the knowledge and perception of secondary school students towards nursing as a career choice for men in selected Local Government of Lagos State, Nigeria. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was carried out on 293 respondents. A multi staged sample technique was used to select study participants. Results revealed that majority of respondents (91.4%) knew nursing as a profession and 88.9% knew that a legal certificate was required to practice nursing, Respondents generally demonstrated a good knowledge of Nursing. There was also a general positive perception towards Nursing as a career (93%). Even thou there was a positive perception towards nursing as a career choice for men generally (53%), half (50.2%) of the students in this study disagreed that nursing was a career choice for female only. Thirty-seven (37%) percent of the students stated that nursing was not a masculine type of career for males to pursue. Also, 65.6% of respondents agreed that nursing was more appropriate for females because they are more caring. There is a need for secondary school students to be aware of what nursing as a profession entails and that gender is not a determining factor of being a better nurse.
The advent of technology has resulted in an information explosion and has affected all aspects of human behaviors. The advent of technology does not only affected communication, but also social conditions, on-going economic change, new political trends, and cultural shifts over time. Academic institutions house an entire generation of young students whom have used technology throughout their lives. The article explores the proliferation of technology on social Interactions and also answered how the proliferation of technology hindered nursing students' interaction. A survey was administered to 101 undergraduate students at selected universities in Nigeria. Students were asked some questions regarding their technology use, habits, and perceptions of face-to-face communication in the presence of technology. Simple random sampling (balloting) method was used to select the undergraduate program that was included in the study. Convenience sampling method was used to select the respondents that participated in the study. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of frequencies counts and percentages. Majority of students felt the quality of their conversations tarnished in the presence of technology. Many of the participants were bothered when friends or family used technology while spending time together. A good percentage of survey respondents communicate more frequently with friends and family via technology than in person, indicating that face-to-face interactions have decreased both in quality and in quantity. This article will help both students and instructors to plan well on how to achieve educational objectives using a mix between traditional pedagogy and technology (in a constructivist approach).
