The use of porous titanium-based implant materials for bone contact has been gaining ground in recent years. Selective laser melting (SLM) is a rapid prototyping method by which porous implants with highly defined external dimensions and internal architecture can be produced. The coating of porous implants produced by SLM with ceramic layers based on calcium phosphate (CaP) remains relatively unexplored, as does the doping of such coatings with magnesium (Mg) to promote bone formation. In this study, Mg-doped coatings of the CaP types octacalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite (HA) were deposited on such porous implants using the pulsed laser deposition method. The coated implants were subsequently implanted in a rabbit femoral defect model for 6 months. Uncoated implants served as a reference material. Bone-implant contact and bone volume in the region of interest were evaluated by histopathological techniques using a tri-chromatographic Masson-Goldner staining method and by microcomputed tomography (µCT) analysis of the volume of interest in the vicinity of implants. Histopathological analysis revealed that all implant types integrated directly with surrounding bone with ingrowth of newly formed bone into the pores of the implants. Biocompatibility of all implant types was demonstrated by the absence of inflammatory infiltration by mononuclear cells (lymphocytes), neutrophils, and eosinophils. No osteoclastic or foreign body reaction was observed in the vicinity of the implants. µCT analysis revealed a significant increase in bone volume for implants coated with Mg-doped HA compared to uncoated implants.
CReep ResIstanCe of VM12 steelThis article presents selected material characteristics of VM12 steel used for elements of boilers with super-and ultracritical steam parameters. In particular, abridged and long-term creep tests with and without elongation measurement during testing and investigations of microstructural changes due to long-term impact of temperature and stress were carried out. The practical aspect of the use of creep test results in forecasting the durability of materials operating under creep conditions was presented. The characteristics of steels with regard to creep tests developed in this paper are used in assessment of changes in functional properties of the material of elements operating under creep conditions.
The paper presents the results of research on the X10CrMoVNbN9-1 (T91) steel after long-term service. The material for testing was taken from a pipe section of a boiler superheater coil serviced for around 105,000 h at the temperature of 540°C, at the pressure of 12.5 MPa. A quantitative analysis including the measurement of mean diameter of subgrains and precipitates as well as the density of dislocations of the examined steel was performed by means of TEM. The microscopic tests of T91 steel were complemented with the results of tests on mechanical properties which included also the short creep tests. After service, the investigated steel was characterized by a retained lath microstructure of tempered martensite with fine subgrain and quite large density of dislocations as well as numerous precipitates. In the microstructure, apart from the particles of M 23 C 6 and MX (VX, NbC, V-wings), the precipitates of Laves phase and single particles of Z phase were revealed. It has been shown that the extent of degradation of the T91 steel microstructure was minor, which resulted from its low temperature of service. Performed tests of mechanical properties showed that these properties fulfilled the minimum requirements for this steel in the as-received condition. A favorable influence of fine precipitates of Laves phase on mechanical properties was observed. Moreover, an insignificant influence of single precipitates of Z phase on the creep resistance of the examined steel was stated.
