Background: Nursing students are the integral part of health care delivery system in future prospects. The accidental transmission of HIV infection to health care workers is a real threat in present situation. Adequate knowledge about the disease and post exposure prophylaxis will help to provide care to patients and prevent infection at health care settings. The objectives of the study was to assess the knowledge of nursing students about HIV / AIDS and post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and association of knowledge level with the different courses of nursing.Methods: Cross sectional study was carried out among final year GNM and BSc nursing students of a nursing college in central Karnataka during December 2017, Data regarding knowledge about HIV infection and PEP was collected using self administered semi structured questionnaire.Results: Total of 108 nursing students took part in the study. BSc nursing students contributed 66.7% of the study subjects. Mean HIV/AIDS knowledge score was 7.86±2.25. Subjects studying BSc nursing had better knowledge when compared to GNM subjects. Seventy two (66.67%) students had heard about post exposure prophylaxis. Majority were unaware about time of initiation (94.6%) and duration of PEP (86.1%).Conclusions: Knowledge about HIV/AIDS and PEP are inadequate among nursing students. It is recommended to incorporate practical issues effectively in their teaching curriculum.
Background: Morbidity and lack of health facility especially in the first five years of life would cause irreparable damage. Therefore it is important to assess the magnitude of morbidities, and their health seeking behaviour. The objectives of the study were to assess the prevalence of acute morbidities and their associated factors among Under-five (U5) children residing in slums of Davanagere city, Karnataka, and to assess the health-seeking behaviour of their mothers/caregiversMethods: It was a cross sectional study done in the slums of Davanagere city during August-September 2016. Using 30 cluster sampling technique, the estimated sample size was 656. A total of 22 children were included in each cluster. Questionnaire consisting of demographic details, history of acute morbidities in the past two weeks and their treatment details was administered to the mother/caregiver. Data was entered in Microsoft Excel sheet and analyzed using SPSS Version 20.Results: Totally 656 mothers/caregivers of U5 children were contacted, majority of the children were in the age group of 13 to 60 months. Total of 348 (53%) children suffered from some acute morbidity in the past 2 weeks, of whom 282 (81%) children were taken to some health care facility, and majority preferred private practitioner (73.4%). Most common reason for poor health seeking behaviour was “following the medicines which were prescribed for previous illness”.Conclusions: More than half of the children suffered from some acute morbidity in the past 2 weeks and 81% of them were taken to health care facility.
Self-medication is a common and regular practice of using medicines without any medical supervision by the people themselves for self-treatment considering it a part of self-care. Self-medication has both positive as well as a negative aspect which may lead to serious chronic ailments, cause resistance to pathogens, delays the symptoms, complicate the cause of the underlying disease and delaying the diagnosis. To assess the prevalence of self-medication among the students in a medical institute in Davangere. 2. To determine the factors associated with self medication among these medical students in Davanagere. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 medical students of SSIMS& RC Davanagere. Data was collected using pre-designed, semi structured questionnaire. The data was entered in MS Excel. Analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Prevalence of self medications among medical students was found to be 41%. Antipyretics were widely used as a drug for self medication. This study reinforces the importance of creating awareness and educating the students regarding the advantages and disadvantages of self medications. Background: Work and family are the most important responsibilities of an adult. The last two decades have been marked by striking changes in the world of work and nature of the family. Work schedules, work orientation, marriage, children and spouse employment patterns may all produce pressures to effectively exhibit ones work role or the family role, which are interdependent. The objectives of the study were to assess work family conflict (WFC) among the working population in a city in Karnataka, and its determinants.Methods: A community based cross sectional study was carried out during August-September 2015 among 400 adult working population of Davangere city, working in different sectors (hospitals, schools, colleges, banks and police department). A pretested structured self-administered questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic details, Carlson’s Work-Family Conflict Scale was used. Data was analyzed using SPSS 10 for frequencies, Chi square test, student’s T test and ANOVA. Results: Out of 400 study participants, 62% were men. Mean scores of work to family conflict was 27.28±5.68 and that of family to work conflict was 25.37±5.61. Time based work to family conflict was more compared to strain and behaviour based. Conflict scores were higher for females, >45 years age, employees who had children, especially child under 5 years of age. WFC was found to be highest among doctors, police and nurses. Conclusions: Work to family conflict was higher than family to work conflict, especially time based.
