An apparatus is described which permits of efficient and simultaneous extraction of a large number of paper strips, as in use in paper electrophoresis. The fully automatic procedure reduces the amount of work required to a minimum.

Introduction. In connection with clinicochemical investigations the need was felt at our laboratory of an apparatus capable of automatic photometry of the paper strips obtained by means of paper electrophoresis 1)s). The apparatus should record a curve and simultaneously calculate the ratio of the various protein fractions. The requirements of such an instrument are great accuracy, moderate speed (max. 3 minutes per analysis) .mad the possibility of writing the curve on the back of cards (10 • 15 cm) to be filed in a card index. These requirements involve the use of a pen recorder coupled to a servomotor, the high precision making the heaviest demands on amplifier and integrator. Rapid stopping of the servomotor is of particular importance to avoid overshoot. The last requirement is that the instrument should stop automatically at the minima of the curve to permit readings of the ratios of the fractions.
