Summary. The development of geriatic surgery in the above-mentioned hospital during the period 1974 to 1984 has been examined. Proportionally, the number of patients over 70 years old, with regard to the general surgery cases, was 14.7% in 1974 and rose to 25.8% in 1983. During the same period the number of 75-year-old patients increased from 7.6% to 17.8%. In 1974, the average age of patients over 70 years old was 75 and in 1983 it was 79.3 years. Compared to Schleswig-Holstein, the average age of 70-year-old patients living on the west coast was 1% higher. The risk factors and postoperative complications are analyzed.
