(Co)variance components were estimated for visual scores of conformation (CY), early finishing (PY) and muscling (MY) at 550 days of age (yearling), average daily gain from weaning to yearling (GWY), conformation (CW), early finishing (PW) and muscling (MW) scores at weaning, and average daily gain from birth to weaning (GBW) in animals forming the Brazilian Brangus breed born between 1986 and 2002 from the livestock files of GenSys Consultants Associados S/C Ltda. The data set contained 53 683; 45 136; 52 937; 56 471; 24 531; 21 166; 24 006 and 25 419 records for CW, PW, MW, GBW, CY, PY, MY and GWY, respectively. Data were analyzed by the restricted maximum likelihood method using single-and two-trait animal models. Direct heritability estimates obtained by single-trait analysis were 0.12, 0.14, 0.13 and 0.14 for CY, PY and MY scores and GWY, respectively. A positive association was observed between the same visual scores at weaning and yearling, with correlations ranging from 0.64 to 0.94. Estimated correlations between GBW and weaning and yearling scores ranged from 0.60 to 0.77. The genetic correlation between GBW and GWY was low (0.10), whereas correlations of 0.55, 0.37 and 0.47 were observed between GWY and CY, PY and MY, respectively. Moreover, GWY showed a weak correlation with CW (0.10), PW (20.08) and MW (20.03) scores. These results indicate that selection of the traits that was studied would result in a small response. In addition, selection based on average daily gain may have an indirect effect on visual scores as the correlations between GWY and visual scores were generally strong.
Palavras-chave: características de crescimento, conformação, efeitos de ambiente, heterozigose individual, musculatura, precocidadeEnvironmental and genetic effects on visual scores and average daily weight gain at the weaning of animals used to form the Brangus breed ABSTRACT -The objective of this work was to study the effects of age of cow at calving (IPV) and age of calf at weaning (IDD) as well as the direct additive genetic effects (AD) and maternal (AM), and the individual heterozygosity (HI) on visual scores of conformation (CD), precocity (PD) and musculature (MD) and average daily weight gain from birth to weaning (GND), for animals used to form the Brangus breed. The study analyzed 53,683, 45,136, 52,937 and 56,471 records on CD, PD, MD and GND, respectively for animals born from 1986 to 2002. The data were provided by "Gensys Consultores Associados S/C Ltda". The environmental and genetics effects on these traits were analyzed using the least square method applying mathematical models that included fixed effects of contemporary group (GC) and IPV, IDD, AD, AM and HI as covariates. All environmental effects included in the model showed significant influence on the evaluated traits at weaning, except for IDD on GND and AM on all traits. All traits were significantly influenced by AD and HI. These results indicated that environmental and genetic effects were important sources of variation for these traits and, consequently, they should be considered in genetic evaluations.Key Words: conformation, environmental effects, growth traits, individual heterozygosity, musculature, precocity IntroduçãoCom a competi...
SUMMARYThis research aimed at studying the effects of age of the cow at calving (IVP), age of the animal at yearling (IDS), the direct additive genetic (AD) and maternal (AM) effects and individual heterozygosity (HI) on visual scores of conformation (CS), early finishing (PS) and muscling (MS) at postweaning and average daily gain from weaning to yearling (GDS) of cattle used to originate the Brangus breed. There were analyzed records on 24 531, 21 166, 24 006 and 25 419 for CS, PS, MS and GDS, respectively, of animals born from 1986 to 2002 belonging to livestock files of Gensys Consultores Associados S/C Ltda.
