The problem of interethnic borderland is represented through the influence of the respondents' attitude to the ethnos, language environment, type of their selfidentification for interaction. The "borderland" as a description of the socio-cultural specificity of the region where different ethnic and religious groups interact draws attention to the socio-cultural aspects of socialisation and enculturation of the individual. The process of self-identification is an example of the borderland dynamics in the aspect of intercultural communication. We hypothesised that the nature of interethnic interaction and the choice of identity strategies may depend on social and cultural characteristics of areas of residence and the dominant type of identity (civic, national, ethnic). The authors used a sociological questionnaire to conduct surveys in the republics of Sakha (Yakutia) and Khakassia from 2008 to 2012. It is revealed that the specific perception of Russian space boundaries by Russian youth is that it coincides with the borders of the country. Republican and ethnic markers are also of great importance for representatives of titular ethnic groups. Regional patriotism is more typical for natives of Siberia than for the Russians, whose "little homeland" is the whole Russia. The comparison of youth's types on preferences of nonlinguistic and polylinguistic environments has shown that ethnic identity is less significant for all types of young people who are indifferent to ethnic and nonlinguistic environment, though it is valuable for ethno centrists. The socio-cultural features of the regions influenced the attitude of the youth towards the choice of language for interethnic cooperation and formation of a sense of patriotism. The right to live in the community is fundamental and is directly related to the possibility of independent living for persons with disabilities, a central principle of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), ratified by Bulgaria in 2012. The opposite of these principles is living in an institution, and being compelled to reside in a space where one does not have the ability or one is not allowed to exercise control over one’s life and day-to-day decisions. Through oral history and anthropological reconstructive analysis, with a special focus on the cultural contexts and social meanings of personal experience, we explore how families of children with disabilities are simultaneously victims of the local disabling legacies, environments and practices, and key agents that effectuate and perpetuate institutional culture. We highlight the dynamics and interactions of the traumatic images on the legacy of state socialism, the actual barriers during the transition period, the coping strategies chosen by families and, ultimately, the grim effects with regard to the affirmation and implementation of the idea of independent living for people with disabilities in Bulgaria.

Much of the recent research attempts to promote and define the notion of transcultural memory tend to focus on ‘the forms of remembering across nations and cultures’ and on the ‘negotiation of colonialism, decolonization, migration, cultural globalization and cosmopolitanism in literature and other media’. Taking these attempts as a point of departure, this article aims at discussing the narrative biographical interview as an instrument for exploring the complex dynamics and dis(utopian) content of memory on the move, which remains without publicity or representation in art and the media. The claims for ‘history from below’ and for ‘getting into the actor’s world’, emblematic for oral history and biographical studies, are applied to migrants’ biographical narratives to show how the ‘traumatic disruption of life’s continuities’ triggers reflection and social criticism from below on the collectively sanctioned modes of remembering of different cultures/cultural pasts. The article also reveals the emancipatory potential of the biographical interview for developing the culture of mobility of middle- and low-socialstatus people, which is based on shared memories of ‘surviving’ in a variety of (hostile) environments.
