This study applies a production function approach to value the groundwater recharge function of the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands in northern Nigeria. The groundwater recharge function supports dry season agricultural production which is dependent on groundwater abstraction for irrigation. Using survey data this paper first carries out an economic valuation of agricultural production, per hectare of irrigated land. We then value the recharge function as an environmental input into the dry season agricultural production and derive appropriate welfare change measures. Welfare change is calculated using the estimated production functions and hypothetical changes in groundwater recharge and hence, groundwater levels. By focusing on agricultural production dependent solely on groundwater resources from the shallow aquifer, this study establishes that the groundwater recharge function of the wetlands is of significant importance for the floodplain.
This article values the groundwater recharge function performed by the Hadejia-Jama'are floodplain which is threatened by planned upstream water utilization schemes. Domestic consumption of groundwater resources for households dependent on groundwater resources is analyzed. Three types of households are identified as (i) those which collect all their water, (ii) those which purchase all their water, and (iii) those which both collect and purchase water. A behavioral model using a household production function approach is developed to model water demand and a panel formed by pooling contingent behavior and observed data is used to estimate demand. Welfare changes are calculated based on these estimates and on hypothetical reductions in the groundwater recharge rate.
Groundwater is one of the most useful water sources. Contamination of such water source is a big problem creating health hazards. In this present study we have collected groundwater samples from different places of Bhiloda taluka of Sabarkantha district (North Gujarat) India. These samples have been assessed on the basis of various qualitative parameters. The results of physico-chemical study of water samples from 13 bore wells in Bhiloda taluka are presented. The water quality parameters such as; pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved salts (TDS), calcium and magnesium, sodium, potassium, carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate, fluoride, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and soluble sodium percentage ( SSP ) were estimated.
