Objective: to investigate the knowledge of speech therapists about the physiology of exercise in orofacial motricity. Methods: 38 speech therapists working in orofacial motricity in the state of Sergipe, Brazil, graduated from institutions of higher education in Brazil, answered eleven closed questions about the type of exercise, frequency, time of muscle contraction, serial number and signs and symptoms of muscular fatigue. The results were analyzed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Chi-square tests (5% significance). Results: the variation of the exercises regarding the time of contraction was cited by the majority (89.47%) and the serial number throughout therapy by all the participants. There was a 60.52% improvement on the isometric and isotonic exercises, 55.26% on the application of exercises in asymmetries and 47.34% on the sequence of exercises according to the type of muscular contraction. The majority of the participants conducted home exercises for more than three days a week (73.69%), and .63% participants indicated the interval time between one minute and two minutes. The most commonly reported signs and symptoms of muscle fatigue in the face were tremor / fibrillation (78.95%). Conclusion: the knowledge of the study group about the physiology of exercise still lacks greater technical-scientific subsidies.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects socio-communicative and behavioral abilities. In the language aspect, there is a greater impairment at the pragmatic level and in non-verbal aspects. The objective of this study was to characterize the severity of Autism Spectrum Disorder in an adolescent, pre-and post-speech-language therapy, and describe the process of speech-language intervention using Picture Exchange Communication System allied to the principles of behavioral analysis applied to language. The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist with the parents was applied. Then, a therapeutic program of 14 sessions of 50 minutes was developed, one per week, and then the questionnaire was reapplied. In the course of the therapeutic process, it was possible to observe an increase in the number of figure exchanges independently, an increase in the number of vocalizations with communicative intention or functional speech, longer time of visual contact and social smile, reduction of inappropriate behaviors with a significant improvement in the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist score.
Aim: To report the pre‐ and post‐frenectomy findings of a patient with Beckwith‐Wiedemann syndrome. Methods and Results: Clinical case report of a patient with a confirmed genetic‐molecular diagnosis of the referred syndrome. The minor was evaluated and reassessed by the protocol for the evaluation of the tongue's frenulum for babies in two moments: pre‐surgical and 2 months after the frenectomy. The surgical procedure was performed using the traditional technique and, after the procedure, the minor was breastfed and received photobiomodulation with a red laser. The minor obtained 16 points in the neonatal tongue screening test, indicating the need for a frenectomy. Thus, she was referred to a dentist for surgery. After the surgical procedure, macroglossia was observed as a maternal complaint (previously not mentioned). The wound healing was satisfactory, and the total score obtained in the reapplication of the protocol (five points) showed functional results of improvements in sucking and tongue mobility, justifying the importance of the frenectomy. Conclusion: Frenectomy, despite showing macroglossia related to the Beckwith‐Wiedemann syndrome, allowed anatomical and functional advances of the tongue in the present clinical case.
