This article describes the process of translating and validating a group assessment toolfor use with Spanish-and Japanese-speaking populations and discusses its utility for research and practice. El Cuestionario de Desarrollo de Grupos (CDG) and the Group Development Questionnaire-Japanese (GDQ-J) represent translations of the Group Development Questionnaire (GDQ). The existence of dependable measures of group developmentfor use with Spanish-and Japanese-speaking populations, along with their counterpart for English speakers, may stimulate more cross-cultural research on work groups and may be of use to practitioners.
This case study explored the links between the developmental profiles of three groups working in a semigovernmental organization in Central America, and it suggests strategies to improve the effectiveness and productivity of those groups. The findings suggested that a brief intervention based on a detailed analysis of a group’s developmental level can produce significant changes in that group’s level of functioning and productivity. Although these results are promising, more studies, employing a more rigorous research design, will be necessary to confirm these findings.
