ResumoAs Doenças do Trato Urinário Inferior Felino (DTUIF) são frequentes na rotina clínica desta espécie, é decorrente de diversos processos mórbidos caracterizados por hematúria, disúria, polaciúria, estrangúria, periúria e obstrução uretral, que afetam principalmente felinos sedentários, de vivência intradomiciliar e com baixa ingestão de água. Com o objetivo de verificar as principais alterações clínicas, laboratoriais e ultrassonográficas nos casos de DTUIF, foram examinados 26 felinos no Hospital Veterinário da UFMT, sendo, 16 com DTUIF e dez hígidos, notando-se que todos os animais doentes apresentaram azotemia, valor médio da concentração sérica de cálcio total diminuído e elevação na concentração sérica de fósforo. Crescimento bacteriano foi observado em um terço dos casos, sendo três possivelmente decorrentes de cateterização vesical, já que eram casos recidivantes. Os achados ultrassonográficos foram compatíveis com quadros de obstrução, tais como: distensão acentuada da vesícula urinária e debris em suspensão, dilatação de ureteres e uretra. In order to check the main clinical, laboratory and ultrasound in cases of FLUTD, 26 cats were available at the Veterinary Hospital of UFMT being 16 with FLUTD and ten healthy, noting that all the sick animals had azotemia, average of serum total calcium decreased and elevation in serum phosphorus. Bacterial growth observed in one third of cases, three possibly due to bladder catheterization, as were recurrent cases. The sonographic findings were compatible with frames of obstruction, such as severe distension of the urinary bladder and debris in suspension, dilated ureters and urethra.
RESUMO: Objetivou-se identificar microrganismos isolados de diferentes tipos de ceratite ulcerativa em cães, juntamente com a sua susceptibilidade a antimicrobianos. O resultado do tratamento médico e cirúrgico também foi correlacionado com o tipo de isolado. Amostras para microbiologia foram obtidas com auxílio de swab estéril em 104 olhos de 72 pacientes sem histórico prévio de tratamento com antibióticos tópicos, atendidos no período de maio de 2012 a março de 2015. Os antibióticos testados foram: neomicina, gentamicina, tobramicina, cloranfenicol, polimixina B, ciprofloxacino, ofloxacino e moxifloxacina. No total, 131 bactérias foram isoladas de 96/104 olhos estudados, sendo o gênero Staphylococcus (48,09%) predominante, seguido por Pseudomonas aeruginosa (16,01%). O Shih Tzu foi a raça mais prevalente (33,33%) e o número de isolados gram-negativos foi significativamente maior nessa raça, comparativamente aos Pinschers (p=0,003), aos Filas, aos Poodles e aos sem raça definida (p=0,046). As bactérias isoladas neste estudo apresentaram maior susceptibilidade ao ofloxacino (84,55%), que foi significativamente mais eficaz em relação a neomicina e a polimixina B (p<0,0001), ao cloranfenicol (p=0,0001), a tobramicina (p=0,0007), a gentamicina (p=0,0021) e as outras fluorquinolonas, ciprofloxacino (p=0,0004) e moxifloxacino (p<0,0001). Os organismos gram-positivos foram isolados de um número significativamente maior de olhos que apresentavam ceratite ulcerativa não complicada, comparativamente àqueles com olhos acometidos por ceratite ulcerativa complicada (p=0,011). Igualmente, o número de bactérias gram-positivas foi maior que o de gram-negativas, tanto nos casos que receberam tratamento médico, como nos que foram operados, sem significativa estatística (p=0,745). Na presente pesquisa, Staphylococcus sp. foi a bactéria mais encontrada nas ceratites ulcerativas não complicadas. Já nos olhos com ceratites complicadas, embora a Pseudomonas aeruginosa tenha sido a bactéria mais predominante, o tratamento clínico foi suficiente para cura da afecção corneal na maior parte dos casos. O ofloxacino e a gentamicina foram os agentes mais eficazes contra a maioria dos isolados, com exceção do Streptococcus sp., onde o cloranfenicol se mostrou o mais eficaz. Ceratites ulcerativas sem complicações que apresentem culturas negativas podem evoluir para ceratites ulcerativas complicadas, salientando a necessidade de tratamento anti-colagenolítico em todos os casos.
RESUMO O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar os resultados de 34 olhos submetidos ao enxerto conjuntival pediculado (ECP) em ceratites ulcerativas profundas (n=5), em ceratites ulcerativas com colagenólise (n=2), descemetocele (n=7), perfuração corneal (n=15) e prolapso de íris (n=5). Os impactos do grau de uveíte e da integridade da córnea foram correlacionados com presença e ausência de visão por tabelas de contingência. Raças braquicefálicas foram acometidas em 91,11% dos casos. O número de córneas consideradas perfuradas [20/34 (58,82%)] foi maior que o de córneas íntegras [14/34 (41,17%)]. Ao 50º dia de pós-operatório, o número de olhos visuais que apresentavam córneas íntegras previamente às cirurgias (n=13) não diferiu significativamente dos olhos com córneas perfuradas (n=12) (P=0,05). Avaliações relativas ao grau de uveíte, revelaram que a metade dos casos foi considerada severa [17/34 (50%)] e na outra metade as uveítes foram consideradas discretas. Dos 17 casos que apresentaram uveíte severa, oito recuperaram a visão. Já nos 17 olhos onde a uveíte foi considerada leve, 15 mantiveram a visão ao final do período de avaliação. Apesar de a integridade da córnea não se correlacionar com a severidade da uveíte (P=0,48), constatou-se que o número de olhos visuais com uveíte discreta foi significativamente maior que os olhos com uveíte severa (P=0,006). Neste estudo, a taxa geral de sucesso visual após ECP foi de 73,52% e a integridade da córnea não exerceu impacto significativo sobre a manutenção da visão. Todavia, olhos acometidos por uveítes severas apresentaram menor chance de recuperar a visão.
This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of the fixed combination of dorzolamide/timolol with those of tafluprost on intraocular pressure (IOP) and pupil diameter (PD) in healthy dogs (n=10). Two experiments were conducted with an interval of 30 days. In both, IOP and PD were assessed at 8, 11, 14, 17, and 20h. Parameters were evaluated during baseline, treatment period of four days, and one day of post-treatment. During treatment phase, IOP decreased by 0.74 (P<0.05), 1.88 (P<0.01), 2.94 (P<0.001), and 3.10mmHg (P<0.01), in dorzolamide/timolol-treated eyes; and by 1.50, 2.18, 2.14, and 2.18mmHg (P<0.001), in tafluprost-treated eyes. PD decreased by 0.24 (P<0.01), 0.32 (P<0.01), 0.49 (P<0.001), and 0.40mm (P<0.001), in dorzolamide/timolol treated eyes; and by 2.31, 2.55, 2.43, and 2.70mm (P<0.001), in tafluprost-treated eyes. Dorzolamide/timolol and tafluprost were able to decrease IOP and PD in healthy dogs. However, a cumulative effect of the fixed combination of dorzolamide/timolol was more effective in reducing IOP, than tafluprost. Comparisons between treatments showed that tafluprost was more effective in reducing PD throughout the treatment phase.
Background: Eyelid coloboma or eyelid agenesis is the most common congenital disease in cats. It can affect both the upper and the lower lids and is commonly bilateral. This congenital defect has been reported in several breeds, such as Persian and Domestic Short-Haired Cat. Generally, this defect results in inversion of the colobomatous eyelid, which can cause trichiasis and inflammatory keratitis and corneal ulceration. The only effective treatment is blepharoplasty. This paper describes the clinical and surgical aspects of four patients treated by lip commissure to eyelid transposition for the repair of eyelid coloboma using the technique described in 2010. Results of this procedure have never been reported in Brazil. Cases: Seven eyes of four cats presenting eyelid coloboma affecting up to two thirds of the eyelid were evaluated in this study. Two of the four cats were males and two were females; their average age was 3 years. All patients were admitted at the same institution, and the main issues were purulent discharge and impaired vision. Diagnosis was based on physical and ophthalmic examination. Non-ulcerative keratitis was present in all cases. Corneal ulcer was diagnosed in three patients by the fluorescein dye test. In two cats, a corneo-conjunctival dermoid was found at the temporal-dorsal region of one eye, and measured approximately 0.3 mm; and the other two exhibited microphthalmia in one eye. No abnormalities were seen in the anterior chamber, lens, and vitreous. One of the cats exhibited retinal detachment, and one exhibited testicular agenesis, both of the abnormalities diagnosed by ultrasound. Complete blood count and biochemical tests were performed in all patients before general anesthesia for the corrective procedure. Before surgery, eyes with ulcerative and non-ulcerative keratitis were treated with topical antibiotics and lacrimommimetics. In the 7 eyes, lip commissure to eyelid transposition technique was used for correction of the colobomatous defect. The procedure consisted of a mucocutaneous flap that simulates a natural eyelid. Corneo-conjunctival dermoids were also removed at the same time by superfcial keratectomy. In the postoperative period, all patients received oral non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug and an antibiotic, as well as cleansing of the surgical wound. All patients exhibited improvement of corneal abnormalities following one week of the procedure. However, three cats had suture dehiscence on the lip commissure, which healed by secondary intention after a week. Two weeks after surgery, superfcial necrosis was observed at the tip of the edge of the transplanted flap, in all cats. In order to promote healing, the necrotic edges were debrided at the time of sutures removal, 10 to 15 days after surgeries; at this time, both lip commissure and eyelid wound had already healed. Facial distortion was presente owing to skin overlapping on the site of the flap. All patients had their ability to blink restored, and there was absence of trichiasis on the flap. However, three cats had thichiasis caused by retraction of the pre-existing eyelid at the medial canthus. Discussion: Good functional and esthetic results were achieved, similarly to those previously described, which allows us to consider that this technique is appropriate for eyelid reconstruction in eyelid coloboma or agenesis cases. Nevertheless, this procedure can have some complications, such as suture dehiscence, facial deformity, superfcial necrosis of the edges of the flap, and trichiasis of the pre-existing eyelid of the medial canthus. To overcome these issues, authors suggest removal of the skin under the flap to decrease facial distortion, and removal of the whole pre-existing eyelid, in order to avoid trichiasis caused by retraction of this tissue.
