The Covid-19 pandemic has severely tested the leadership and communication abilities of political leaders globally. Guiding an effective response to the global pandemic has required leaders to demonstrate not only effective planning and coordination skills, but the ability to communicate clear consistent messages in an empathetic manner as well. In New Zealand the first confirmed case of Covid-19 was recorded on February 28 and over the course of March and April 2020, 1,132 further cases of Covid-19 were confirmed and 19 deaths -a much lower transmission rate than most industrialized nations. On 27 April 2020, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that they had won the battle against community transmission of Covid-19. This paper analyses the speeches and public statements (n = 40) made by Prime Minister Ardern in March and April 2020 through the lens of crisis leadership and crisis communication. In particular, it looks at the use of different mediums (parliamentary statements, daily briefings, Facebook Live broadcasts and podcasts) as mechanisms for engaging in narrative and dialogue with the public. The paper underscores the importance of communication in crisis management and looks at how positive and consistent messaging inspires confidence and social solidarity.
The aim of this study was to critically analyse the impact of the ‘Leadership in Compassionate Care Programme’ and offer a conceptual model of factors that can embed compassionate care in contemporary health care environments. This three-year initiative (2008–2011) was designed to embed compassionate care in both practice and pre-registration education. Using a realistic evaluation approach this longitudinal qualitative study involved data collection in eight participating wards. The ‘level of adoption’ of the Programme varied across the wards, which pointed to key context and mechanisms that were influential in embedding compassionate care. Contextual factors that promoted adoption of the Programme were stability, support and leadership. The most important mechanisms were appreciative inquiry coupled with skilled facilitation. Powerful practice development techniques focused on articulating and demonstrating values; giving patients, relatives and staff a voice to express their experiences and emotions; and instituting effective feedback mechanisms. In the high adopting wards the main outcomes included personalisation of patient care, an increased sense of involvement for relatives and ‘caring conversations’ becoming an accepted part of working practice. Embedding and sustaining compassionate care demands strategic vision and investment in a local infrastructure that supports relationship-centred care, practice development and effective leadership at all levels.

Many employees experience work-family conflict (WFC) and family-work conflict (FWC), multidimensional states of resource depletion. In this paper, we conceptualize Type A and B personality as resource depletion and resource gain scenarios that have implications for perceptions of WFC and FWC. We draw on conservation of resources (COR) theory to examine the resource loss and gain resulting respectively from Type A and B personality and the resource-generating role of ability-based emotional intelligence (EI) on multiple dimensions of WFC and FWC. Utilizing a sample of 305 managers for 15 ICT organizations in India, we uncover a fine-grained pattern of results indicating that Type A personality represents resource loss while Type B personality represents resource gain in the context of time, strain and behavior based WFC and FWC. We also found that ability-based EI performed restorative and additive resource functions as a moderator in the context of these relationships. The key outcome of the study is that ability-based EI performs an important role in the context of different types of WFC and FWC because it generates resources to address these conflicts.
