Gastrointestinal cancers are a global public health problem, which represent a vast majority of all cancer‐caused deaths in both men and women. On the other hand, viral pathogens have been long implicated as etiological factors in the onset of certain human cancers, including gastrointestinal tumors. In this regard, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Epstein‐Barr Virus (EBV), and John Cunningham Virus (JCV) have been more strongly suggested to be involved in gastrointestinal carcinogenesis; so that, the association of HPV with oropharyngeal and anal cancers and also the association of EBV with gastric cancer have been etiologically confirmed by epidemiological and experimental investigations. Although, the association of other viruses is less evident, but may rely on co‐factors for their oncogenic roles. Therefore, to improve the prevention and treatment of these classes of cancer, their association with viral agents as potential risk factors should be investigated with care. In this respect, the present review has focused on the existing literature on the subject of viral involvement in gastrointestinal tumorgenesis, by covering and discussing various gastrointestinal cancers, corresponding viral agents and their oncogenic aspects and then summarizing evidences either supporting or rejecting a causal role of these pathogens in gastrointestinal malignancies.
This in vitro study was performed to evaluate the effect of a diode laser and common disinfectants used in combination on mono-infected dental canals. One hundred and six single-rooted human premolars were prepared and contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis. After two weeks of incubation, samples were divided into two experimental groups (n = 48) and two control groups (n = 5). In the first group, the teeth were rinsed for 5 min with either sterile saline, 2.5% NaOCl, or MTAD, or for 1 min with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX). In the other group, samples were additionally irradiated with a 810-nm diode laser at 2 W output for 5 × 5 s. Intracanal bacterial sampling was done, and the samples were plated to determine the CFU count. In the first group, 2.5% NaOCl was as effective as 2% CHX and significantly more effective than MTAD (P < 0.008). In the second group, either MTAD, 2% CHX or 2.5% NaOCl in combination with laser treatment had a similar effect. Absence of growth was seen only for MTAD plus laser treatment. Complete elimination of E. faecalis was seen only for the combination of MTAD with diode laser irradiation. Combination therapy with MTAD irrigation and diode laser irradiation, within the parameters used in this study, can be recommended as an effective treatment option for complete elimination of E. faecalis from the root canal system.
Purpose To evaluate the disinfectant properties of the three multipurpose contact lens disinfecting solutions available in Iran, against clinical isolates and the standard ISO ATCC strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, based on the international organization for standardization (ISO) 14729 guidelines. Methods Three multipurpose solutions that were tested were ReNu Multiplus, Solo Care Aqua and All-Clean Soft. The test solutions were challenged with clinical isolates and the standard strains of P. aeruginosa (ATCC 9027) and S. aureus (ATCC 6538), based on the ISO Stand-alone procedure for disinfecting products. Solutions were sampled for surviving microorganisms at manufacturer's minimum recommended disinfection time. The number of viable organisms was determined and log reductions calculated. Results All of the three test solutions in this study provided a reduction greater than the required mean 3.0 logarithmic reduction against the recommended standard ATCC strains of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. Antibacterial effectiveness of Solo Care Aqua and All-Clean Soft against clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus were acceptable based on ISO 14729 Stand-alone test. ReNu MultiPlus showed a minimum acceptable efficacy against the clinical isolate of S. aureus, but did not reduce the clinical isolate by the same amount. Conclusions Although the contact lens disinfecting solutions meet/exceed the ISO 14729 Stand-alone primary acceptance criteria for standard strains of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, their efficacy may be insufficient against clinical isolates of these organisms.
Background: The prevalence of resistance to aminoglycosides among P. aeruginosa isolates has increased all around the world. The resistance is caused through different mechanisms. One of these mechanisms is the use of enzymes such as phosphoryltransferases, acetyltransferases, and nucleotidyltransferases.
Background This study was aimed to characterize the genetic diversity and expression of three putative resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND)-type efflux systems and their contribution to multidrug efflux in clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii. Methods Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of 95 A. baumannii isolates was determined by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion for 18 antibiotics and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of colistin was determined by the broth microdilution method. Moreover, the MIC of five classes of antibiotics was assessed using E-test strips in the presence and absence of phenylalanine-arginine beta-naphthylamide (PAβN). Regulatory genes of the RND efflux pumps (adeRS, adeL, adeN and baeSR) were subjected to sequencing. The relative expression of adeB, adeG and adeJ genes was determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Results Overall, the majority of isolates (94%) were extensively drug-resistant (XDR). In the phenotypic assay, efflux pump activity was observed in 40% of the isolates against multiple antibiotics mainly tigecycline. However, we found no efflux activity against imipenem. Several amino acid substitutions were detected in the products of regulatory genes; except in AdeN. Of note, G186V mutation in AdeS was found to be associated with overexpression of its efflux pump. No insertion sequences were detected. Conclusions Our findings outlined the role of RND efflux pumps in resistance of A. baumannii to multiple antibiotics particularly tigecycline, and pointed out the importance of a variety of single mutations in the corresponding regulatory systems. Further studies are required to decipher the precise role of RND efflux pumps in multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of A. baumannii.
