Background: University undergraduates are representative of the Nigerian youth population; and sustainable development in any nation depends on the resourcefulness of her youth. This necessitates the need to drive excellence among Nigerian undergraduates through quality education and advice. Quality education is demonstrated in character and in learning; and characters of discipline, responsibility and diligence serve as the hallmark of excellence among university undergraduates. It is hypothesized that time management practices will be positively related to character development and academic performance among university undergraduates. Method: The case study and ex-post facto research designs were adopted in this study. Questionnaire was administered to 120 Diploma and Certificate students of Leadership Development Programme in Covenant University. Results: The findings revealed a positive relationship between character development and time management practices (r = .44, p < .01) and between character development and academic performance(r = .23, p < .05). The result further revealed that time management practices predicted character development (R 2 = .241, F (3,116) = 12.383, p < .01) and character development predicted academic performance (R 2 = .241, F (3,116) = 5.412, p < .01). However, no significant relationship was found between time management practice and academic performance (r = .18, p > .05). Conclusion: It was concluded that in the quest for academic excellence, building E. I. Olowookere et al. 80 performance characters such as discipline, responsibility and diligence among university undergraduates was as important as improving the quality and standard of learning. This study therefore recommended that time management training be incorporated into academic advising and tutoring programs in the Nigerian academia.
The discourse in the business world has gone beyond the primary purpose of business. While some scholars would argue that the primary purpose of business is profit maximization, others are of the opinion that business, beyond maximizing profit, exists to promote and enhance the well-being of humanity. Between these two divides, this paper attempts to contribute robustly to this perennial dialogue by interjecting Kant's categorical imperative in pursuing the argument that though profit maximization is essential for business expansion, nonetheless the value of the human persons-both customers and employees-is equally and primarily essentially. Within the scope of this study, the researchers appeal to literature as case studies were presented to underscore the various attempts at making profit and pursuing personal economic benefit by some entrepreneurs without taking cognizance of the importance of the human persons that buy their proposed products. At the end, this paper vehemently appeals to the moral consciousness of entrepreneurs across the globe to integrate moral values to their pursuit of business profit and economic expansion.
In the face of current events in the global community, Africa cannot afford to lag-behind in pursuing a meaningful sustainable development in all strata. The current crisis of relevance of the African societies in the comity of nations is traceable to the obvious poverty, under development, irresponsive and irresponsible governance, illegitimate political administrations, prolonged military administrations, martial social and economic systems, repressive policies, and etc. This paper employed qualitative method of research dwelling on the use of secondary data, analyzed through the method of content and descriptive analysis. From the secondary data gathered and analyzed, it was discovered that the dilemma of the African societies is the absence of public spirited leadership which these writers preferred to refer to as Ethical Political Leadership. A society either rises or falls depending on the kind of leadership within its system. This paper therefore concluded that Africa needs this style of leadership that is first and foremost people-oriented. The absence of this has been the bane of any meaningful development in Africa. If we must develop and transverse this level of living at the mercy of the international organizations and almost absolute reliance on development assistance, African political leaders must rise to the responsibility of engendering a social system that will reduce corruption in both public and private spheres, and must also get involved in outright formulation and implementation of policies that will enhance the self-realization of the African citizens. Above all, this paper recommends the need for moral education in Africa.
