Paper E1.80.In the classroom, while Gutenberg and Caxton are considered essential general knowledge, when we remember the inventors of photography, cinema and television, the most technologically advanced visual media, at alland we rarely dowe realize that Daguerre, Lumiere and Baird were Europeans, not Americans. Yet, if we agree with C. W. Ceram, author of the fascinating Archaeology of the Cinema, that 'what matters in history is not whether certain chance discoveries take place, but whether they take effe~t'~, we can see that, with exceptions, these inventions have taken more effect in the United States than anywhere else. And it greatly matterswhether we are considering, amongst several other possible areas, the technical history of the media, the development of educational technology, oras is my purpose herethe subject matter and teaching methods of American Studies.
