We here conduct ancient DNA analyses on 58 chicken bones from 15 archaeological sites (from the 9th to the 18th century AD) across the Volga region, the Leningrad region, the Pskov region, and the north of the Krasnoyarsk region to investigate genetic diversity of past chicken populations within this geographical area. We find all samples belong to sub-haplogroup E1, ubiquitous throughout the world and dominant in Europe, Africa and the Americas. This supports an introduction of chickens from the west, rather than a direct introduction from East Asia. Our study also demonstrates good endogenous DNA content, confirming species identification and sex of the individuals, thus highlighting the potential of genetic studies on archaeological remains in that region.
The authors discuss the results of analyzing scientometric indicators of “Povolzhskaya аrkheologiya” journal acquired to the Web of Sciences, Scopus and RSCI (Russian Science Citation Index) databases. To specify the journal position within the archeological periodicals and its possible inclusion into the Web of Science database, the study findings were compared to the analyses results for the Russian authoritative academic journals in the related domains. The rating for selected journals by Scopus and RSCI key scientometrics indicators is built. The journal position in these ratings is discussed. Within the Web of Science system, the indicator of the journal “latent citation” is obtained. The journal dynamics within the databases under examination is demonstrated. The articles published in 2015–2019 are analyzed for their territorial affiliation. Based on the analysis results, the authors determine the journal position in the national and global context and suggest that “Povolzhskaya аrkheologiya” journal has got high starting position if included into the Web of Science.

The paper features the results of a study of archaeozoological materials from the excavations of 2018 at the Makaryevskoye hillfort located in the Verkhneuslonsky District of the Republic of Tatarstan. The completed species, age and breed studies have revealed the composition of domestic and wild game fauna, and the role of individual animal species in the life and nutrition of the local population. Their comparison with similar information obtained at the excavations of other sites of the Ananyino and Imenkovo periods has allowed to identify similarities and differences in the herd composition of the population of the Volga and Kama region hillforts. Wild game fauna is represented by bone remains of elk, bear, boar, fox, beaver and hare. According to the herd composition of domestic animals and the content of bone fragments of the hunting and fishing fauna, the Makaryevskoye hillfort is a typical monument of the Early Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
