OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between body fat percentage and body mass index (BMI) in three different ethnic groups in Singapore (Chinese, Malays and Indians) in order to evaluate the validity of the BMI cut-off points for obesity. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: Two-hundred and ninety-one subjects, purposively selected to ensure adequate representation of range of age and BMI of the general adult population, with almost equal numbers from each ethnic and gender group. MEASUREMENTS: Body weight, body height, sitting height, wrist and femoral widths, skinfold thicknesses, total body water by deuterium oxide dilution, densitometry with Bodpod 1 and bone mineral content with Hologic 1 QDR-4500. Body fat percentage was calculated using a four-compartment model. RESULTS: Compared with body fat percentage (BF%) obtained using the reference method, BF% for the Singaporean Chinese, Malays and Indians were under-predicted by BMI, sex and age when an equation developed in a Caucasian population was used. The mean prediction error ranged from 2.7% to 5.6% body fat. The BMIaBF% relationship was also different among the three Singaporean groups, with Indians having the highest BF% and Chinese the lowest for the same BMI. These differences could be ascribed to differences in body build. It was also found that for the same amount of body fat as Caucasians who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kgam 2 (cut-off for obesity as de®ned by WHO), the BMI cut-off points for obesity would have to be about 27 kgam 2 for Chinese and Malays and 26 kgam 2 for Indians. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that the relationship between BF% and BMI is different between Singaporeans and Caucasians and also among the three ethnic groups in Singapore. If obesity is regarded as an excess of body fat and not as an excess of weight (increased BMI), the cut-off points for obesity in Singapore based on the BMI would need to be lowered. This would have immense public health implications in terms of policy related to obesity prevention and management.
ObjectiveseSport is a form of electronic gaming, also known as professional or competitive video gaming, and is growing at a rapid pace worldwide. Over 50 US colleges have established varsity gaming teams over the past three years; some colleges offer eSport scholarships as they do for traditional sports. There is little objective research on the health habits of these players who are often placed under the direction of the athletics department on college campuses, and there is currently no health management model on how to treat these new athletes.MethodsAnonymous electronic surveys were sent to 65 collegiate eSport players from nine universities across the USA and Canada inquiring about gaming and lifestyle habits, and musculoskeletal complaints due to eSport competition.ResultsPlayers practiced between 3 and 10 hours per day. The most frequently reported complaint was eye fatigue (56%), followed by neck and back pain (42%). eSport athletes reported wrist pain (36%) and hand pain (32%). Forty per cent of participants do not participate in any form of physical exercise. Among the players surveyed, only 2% had sought medical attention.ConclusioneSport players, just like athletes in traditional sports, are susceptible to overuse injuries. The most common complaint was eye fatigue, followed by neck and back pain. This study shows eSport athletes are also prone to wrist and hand pain. This paper proposes a health management model that offers a comprehensive medical team approach to prevent and treat eSport athletes.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that differences in the relationship between percent body fat (%BF) and body mass index (BMI) between populations can be explained (in part) by differences in body build. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, comparative study. SUBJECTS: 120 age, gender and BMI matched Singapore Chinese, Beijing Chinese and Dutch (Wageningen) Caucasians. MEASUREMENTS: From body weight and body height, BMI was calculated. Relative sitting height (sitting heightaheight) was used as a measure of relative leg length. Body fat was determined using densitometry (underwater weighing) in Beijing and Wageningen and using a three-compartment model based on densitometry and hydrometry in Singapore. Wrist and knee widths were measured as indicators for frame size and skeletal mass was calculated based on height, wrist and knee width. In addition, a slenderness index (heightasum of wrist and knee width) was calculated. RESULTS: For the same BMI, Singapore Chinese had the highest %BF followed by Beijing Chinese and the Dutch Caucasians. Singaporean Chinese had a more slender frame than Beijing Chinese and Dutch Caucasians. Predicted %BF from BMI, using a Caucasian prediction formula, was not different from measured %BF in Wageningen and in Beijing, but in Singapore the formula underpredicted %BF by 4.0 AE 0.8% (mean AE s.e.m.) compared to Wageningen. The difference between measured and predicted %BF (bias) was related to the level of %BF and with measures of body build, especially slenderness. Correction for differences in %BF, slenderness and relative sitting height, decreased the differences between measured and predicted values compared to the Dutch group from 1.4 AE 0.8 (not statistically signi®cant, NS) to 7 0.2 AE 0.5 (NS) in Beijing and from 4.0 AE 0.8 (P`0.05) to 0.3 AE 0.5 (NS) in Singapore (all values mean AE s.e.m.). CONCLUSIONS: The study results con®rm the hypothesis that differences in body build are at least partly responsible for a different relationship between BMI and %BF among different (ethnic) groups.
In an attempt to study which factors determine the transferability of monolayers of preformed polymers from the air-water interface onto substrates we investigated flexible polymers (poly(octadecylmethacrylates) (PODMAs)) and 0t-helical polymers (polyglutamates). Pressure-area isotherms show the formation of a liquid-analogous state which depends on temperature and side chain "impurity". Ymode Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers of these polymers can be formed with a constant transfer ratio under conditions at which a more or less liquid-analogous state exists. Polarized IR spectra suggest that the polyglutamate a helices in the multilayer are oriented with the main axis parallel to the transfer direction and that carbon Side chains are practically randomly oriented around the a-helical cylinder. In PODMA multilayers the side chains are perpendicular to the film. In both cases the sidechains seem to interdigitate.
