The effective stress intensity factor range ΔKeff of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been determined by using the threshold behavior of this material. The ΔKeff values thus determined are in complete agreement with the materials constant amplitude crack growth behavior. ΔKeff values determined from the opening load obtained by crack opening displacement (COD) and by back-face strain (BFS) are not consistent with the ΔKeff values obtained via threshold and cannot explain certain load sequence effects. This leads to the conclusion that COD and BFS measurements are unsuitable for the determination of ΔKeff, at least for this titanium alloy.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
