We present the rationale, implementation and performance features of a virtual lab environment for an electronic circuits course. The primary purpose of the tool is to aid the student in learning debugging techniques by providing an environment that emulates some of the failure modes of a real lab. The tool is implemented as a Java application.

In the midst (October '85) of my most recent episode of voluntary unemployment, I have noticed a marked change in the manner of hiring data processing employees. Back when I broke into the field (1959), before there were computer science majors, companies were willing, even eager, to hire one off the street and teach him the ropes (or, more often, to let him learn the ropes by himself, since there were not that many people familiar with the equipment).
