The results of extensive laser measurements carried out in the blade passages of a newly designed backswept impeller are presented and discussed. Noticeable distortions of the throughflow patterns and a distinct swirling flow character were found inside the rotor. The measurement results and a simple theoretical approach suggest that the distorted throughflow patterns and the secondary flows are caused by a vortex flow. Although the relative flow has been significantly decelerated a comparatively smooth velocity profile has been identified at the rotor discharge that differed widely from the well-known jet/wake-type flow pattern.
This paper presents a novel fibre optic laser Doppler position sensor for single blade tip clearance and vibration measurements at turbo machines, which offers high temporal resolution and high position resolution simultaneously. The sensor principle is based on the generation of a measurement volume consisting of two superposed fan-like interference fringe systems with contrary fringe spacing gradients using wavelength division multiplexing. A flexible and robust measurement system with an all-passive fibre coupled measurement head has been realized employing diffractive and refractive optics. Measurements of tip clearance and rotor vibrations at a transonic centrifugal compressor performed during operation at up to 50 000 rpm (833 Hz) corresponding to 21.7 kHz blade frequency and 586 m s−1 blade tip velocity are presented. The results are in excellent agreement with those of capacitive probes. The mean uncertainty of the position measurement was around 20 µm and, thus, considerably better than for conventional tip clearance probes. Consequently, this sensor is capable of fulfilling the requirements for future active clearance control systems and has great potential for in situ and online tip clearance and vibration measurements at metallic and non-metallic turbine blades with high precision.
The flow field development within a centrifugal compressor stage was analyzed using an advanced laser velocimetry [4]. A splitter blade impeller coupled with a vaned and vaneless diffuser has been found to have similar internal flow patterns for both the vaneless and vaned diffuser design. Different velocity profiles have been analyzed for adjacent channels behind the splitter blade leading edge. A considerable wake flow was observed near the impeller exit. Detailed optical measurements within the vaned diffuser entrance region gave evidence of a periodically fluctuating, highly distorted diffuser inlet flow. Unsteady flow angle deviations of 13 degrees have been discovered within the diffuser throat. Maximum flow angle differences up to 27 degrees occurred from hub to shroud.

In an industrial research project of German and Swiss Turbo Compressor manufacturers a high pressure ratio centrifugal impeller was designed and investigated. Performance measurements and extensive laser measurements (L2F) of the flow field upstream, along the blade passage and downstream of the impeller have been carried out. In addition to that, 3D calculations have been performed, mainly for the design point. Results have been presented by Krain et al., 1995 and 1998, Eisenlohr et al., 1998 and Hah et al.,1999. During the design period of this impeller a radial blade at the inlet region was mandatory to avoid a rub at the shroud due to stress reasons. The measurements and the 3D calculations performed later, however, showed a flow separation at the hub near the leading edge due to too high incidence. Additionally a rather large exit width and a high shroud curvature near the exit caused a flow separation near the exit, which is enlarged by the radially transported wake of the already addressed hub separation. Changes to the hub blade angle distribution to reduce the hub incidence and an adaptation of the shroud blade angle distribution for the same impeller mass-flow at the design point were investigated by means of 3D calculations first with the same contours at hub and shroud; this was followed by calculations with a major change of the shroud contour including an exit width change with a minor variation of the hub contour. These calculations showed encouraging results; some of them will be presented in conjunction with the geometry data of the original impeller design.
