The Algerian horse population Bar, Origin Barb unknown, Arabian-Barb, Arabian, Thoroughbred (Pur sang); French Trotter, Algerian saddle, and Saddle are under a significant loss of genetic variability. This should be evaluated before any breed conservation and management program. For this purpose, genetic analyzes of diversity and differentiation were carried out on eight breeds horses reared in Algeria with 17 microsatellites. All microsatellite markers were highly polymorphic in all Breeds. A total of 170 alleles from 17 microsatellite loci were detected in 279 horses. The average number of alleles per locus was highest in Arabian-Barb horses (7.88) and lowest in Saddle breed (4.94). The observed heterozygosity interbreeds ranged from 0.685 to 0.625 for Barb and Saddle, while the expected heterozygosity was ranged from 0.746 to 0.678 for Arabian-Barb and Algerian Saddle respectively, the Ho value is lower than that of He value. Genetic diversity between breeds was significant, based on Fst. Three different approaches to assess genetic relationships have been applied; namely, genetic distances, factorial correspondence analysis, and admixture analysis have shown that a significant amount of genetic variation is maintained in populations of native horses and other breeds: the Barb, Arabian-Barb, Barb (Oi). Algerian Saddle and Saddle breeds appear to be the most genetically related and support that there are crosses between these two breeds.
The lipochromic mosaic canary is a cage bird breed present with different coat colors, red, and yellow, this breed presents a significant sexual dichromatism. Dichromatism in lipochromic mosaic canaries is explained by differential carotenoid degradation in the integument, rather than sex-specific variation in physiological functions such as pigment uptake or transport. Males have an intense color compared to females and especially at the shoulders and head. We studied sexual size dimorphism (SSD) because this study aimed to investigate whether gender has an impact on thirteen body measurements which are (Head Length, Head Width, Distance Between the Eyes, Beak Length, Beak Width, Chest Circumference, Body Length, Body Width, Wing Length, Sternum Length, Upper Tarsus Length, Lower Tarsus Length, and Tail Length) in 40 native lipochromic mosaic canaries (19 males and 21 females) raised in the Wilaya of Tlemcen Northwest of Algeria. The results showed that there were differences between genders for three characters that are CC (Chest Circumference), BL (Body Length), and WL (Wing Length). Males had more developed measurable traits than females.
The "Sloughi" is a North African sighthound that the World Canine Organization recognizes as a Moroccan greyhound (breed standard n 188). The aim of this study is to compare the distribution of the body measurements of the Algerian sighthound by sex, sampling zones and body coat color. Sixteen morphometric variables were measured and six indices were estimated (format, massiveness, bone, head/neck, muzzle/head, withers/rump) in 30 adult unrelated animals (21 males and 9 females). The impact of sex on variables and indices was assessed using the t-test, while that of the sampling zones and that of the coat color using ANOVA. The mean values for withers height, height at rump, head length, muzzle length, ears length, neck length, body length, tail length, muzzle circumference, head circumference, neck circumference, chest circumference, waist circumference, thigh circumference, forearm circumference, wrist circumference were 71.85, 70.61, 25.24, 10.83, 13.16, 21.23, 68.44, 43.55, 21.50, 33.63, 41.27, 73.35, 48.73, 34.48, 14.67 and 10.81 cm, respectively. The results showed that there was no sexual dimorphism according to the phenotypic traits, the difference between the animals was only due to their body measurements. Males had more developed measurable traits than females, and the mean of Shannon’s diversity index for all variables was 0.99363
