The authors examined the publication patterns of 821 counselor educators across 174 comprehensive universities for the years 2008 through 2017. Nearly half of the sample did not have any journal article publications, and the median number of publications was 1. Several institutional variables were useful for predicting article publication counts.
Many clients bring a belief in God or a Higher Power into counseling sessions. What is less clear, however, is how counselors conceptualize “god,” which may affect how spirituality is integrated in the counseling process. To explore this question, the authors conducted a concept map study of god images among counseling students. Results suggest that students harbor broad and diverse conceptualizations of god, which may affect the counseling process.
Despite widespread effects of parental substance use on children, little is known about the experiences of school counselors working with this student population. We examine the experiences of elementary school counselors working with school-aged children affected by parental substance use. Eight school counselors participated in semistructured interviews, which we analyzed using consensual qualitative research. Participants described significant contact with the population in question. Findings suggest that elementary school counselors utilize multitiered interventions but need additional training and job support to meet the prevalent needs of this student population. We provide implications for school counseling practice, research, and counselor training.
