The COVID-19 crisis has been a challenging and stressful event for individuals with known underlying health problems, not to mention their higher risk of contracting the disease. This phenomenological inquiry was conducted to explore the common self-care practices of the Meranao tribe in the Province of Lanao del Sur, Philippines, concerning their management of hypertension amidst the ongoing pandemic health crisis. This study employed a descriptive-phenomenological approach. Ten known hypertensive adults participated in the study selected using purposive sampling. Data collection employed focus group discussion (FGD) and then analyzed using Colaizzi's approach. Four themes were derived which explained the common practices of the tribe in the self-care management of hypertension amidst the crisis: 1) the use of herbal remedies; 2) compliance with prescribed medications; 3) dietary control; and 4) remaining physically active. Patients’ strict compliance with known scientific self-care practices in managing hypertension forms a multidimensional strategy in controlling, managing, and preventing hypertension and its related complications.Abstrak Studi Fenomenologi tentang Praktik Manajemen Perawatan Diri pada Pasien Hipertensi Saat Pandemi COVID-19. The association between spiritual activities and quality of life (QoL) has received scholarly attention from different religious affiliation. This study centers on examining the interrelationship of tripartite variableschurch attendance, family support and quality of life among elderly at southern part of Mindanao, Philippines through path analysis approach as multivariate research. A reliable (α=0.94) and valid 13-item Family Support Scale (FSS) and WHOQOL-BREF 26-items questionnaire (α=0.88) has been adapted to gather data from stratified randomly selected 50 elderly participants. It shows that elderly have 66 to 78% church attendance with a mean of 72%, have some family support (M=72.42) and high QoL (M=79.90). QoL is significantly influence by church attendance and family support (R =0.20). Then, family support significantly influences church attendance and so a significant mediator between family support and QoL (R = 0.17; β = 0.131; sig = 0.036). The path analysis model conveys that the association between family support and church attendance and both as an independent variable are indispensable for the promotion of Filipino elderly's QoL. It has important place for consideration in the plan of care. Other variables are recommended for in-depth inquiry to promote a holistic elderly's QoL model.
This study aims to explore the relationship between spiritual well-being and the quality of life of older adults. Thus, a descriptive correlational study was conducted with 97 older adults from Marawi City who were residing in temporary evacuation centers. The older adults were recruited by census from 5 evacuation centers located in Iligan City and the Municipalities of Pantar, Saguiaran, and Balo-i. Data were collected through the Spirituality Assessment Scale, and the Older People’s Quality of Life Questionnaire. Most of the older adults attained a fair or mixed spiritual well-being (overall mean=3.80) and a fairly positive overall quality of life (overall mean=3.50). According to Spearman Rho Correlation, there was a positive correlation between spiritual wellbeing and quality of life (p=0.048). Therefore, as spiritual well-being increases, so does the quality of life.
Background: The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has distorted the education system, which greatly challenged educators in the pursuit of the continuity and quality of education. Commitment to perform duties and responsibilities are bounded in coping with the situation, emotional state, and the support from the organization. Objective: To analyze and understand the presumed interrelationship of modeled variables, such as the coping style, anxiety level, organizational support, and work commitment of educators during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: It is a mixed-methods study through an explanatory sequential approach. The path analysis technique was applied for quantitative with 116 educators as sample respondents guided by selection criteria. Digital immigrant educators with extreme responses were identified and asked permission for an interview. Open-access adapted questionnaires used were Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Perceived Organizational Support (POS), Allen and Meyer’s Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). Data were processed and analyzed using SPSS and AMOS for descriptive and inferential statistics. A four-domain semi-structured questionnaire served as a guide in interviewing participants in the context of coping, anxiety, support, and work commitment. Thematic analysis was performed to generate themes. Results: This study shown that educators often used coping style (1.87 ± 0.84; Mean ± SD), have a low level of anxiety (0.58 ± 0.69; Mean ± SD), have perceived uncertainty related to organizational support (4.03 ± 1.37; Mean ± SD), and neither agree nor disagree in terms of their work commitment (3.02 ± 0.93; Mean ± SD). The presumed model through path analysis has significantly predicted 28% plausibility (R2= 0.28) with only organizational support that shown significant influence towards educators’ work commitment (β = 0.22). The themes that emerged are challenging adjustment, predestined situation, fear of getting infected, difficulty teaching effectively, technologically challenged, psychosocial assistance, uncertainty, and willingness to explore. Conclusion: Educators during the COVID-19 pandemic were able to cope and control their anxiety through the test of time, seamless work commitment, and presence of support. This study can be considered a framework for situational analysis of nurse educators in the academic realm in times of emergency and disaster.
