Part 1 deals with equilibrium concentrations of twenty-nine gaseous and five condensed constituents which were calculated for the combustion gases from two coals. Temperatures ranged from 440 to 3140 F and fuel-air ratios from 90 to 130 per cent of theoretical air. Results are presented in graphical and tabular form paying particular attention to sodium, sulfur, and chlorine compounds. A few of the many possible inferences relevant to fouling, corrosion, and air pollution are pointed out. Starting from the equilibrium-gas-composition results of Part 1, the regions of thermodynamic stability of various sodium and iron compounds are obtained in Part 2 as functions of temperature and fuel-air ratio. It is shown that purely thermodynamic considerations impose an upper temperature limit upon corrosion mechanisms involving complex iron sulfates. An explanation is advanced for the severe fouling tendency of high alkali coals.
Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of death among women worldwide, with 85% of the burden falling on low- to middle- income countries. We studied the correlates of cervical cancer incidence and mortality, and case-fatality in Sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: Country-level data on 16 putative cervical cancer correlates for 37 Sub-Saharan African countries were collected from publicly available data sources. We performed univariate and multiple (stepwise) linear regression analyses to identify correlates of cervical cancer incidence and mortality, and case-fatality. Results: In univariate analyses, incidence and mortality rates were significantly correlated with contraceptive use, penile cancer incidence, and human immunodeficiency virus prevalence. Incidence rates were also correlated with literacy rates, whereas mortality rates were correlated with the proportion of rural population and screening coverage. Multiple regression analyses showed contraceptive use (p=0.009) and penile cancer incidence (p=0.004) as associated with cervical cancer incidence. Penile cancer incidence (p=9.77 x 10-5) and number of medical doctors (p=0.0433) were associated with mortality. The goodness of fit of the incidence and mortality models was moderate at best, explaining 49% and 37% of variability in the data, respectively. However, the case-fatality model had the best fit explaining most of the variation (adjusted R2=0.948; p=6.822 x 10-16). Conclusions: To reduce the burden of cervical cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa, it would be important to design multimodal interventions that not only target screening and HPV vaccination, but also focus on cervical cancer correlates. Impact: Identifying contextual factors associated with cervical cancer in this region could inform targeted interventions.
RATIONALE: Panic disorder (PD) has been shown to be associated with worse asthma outcomes in individuals with asthma, but the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Some theories suggest that asthmatics with PD have worse underlying asthma severity and some argue that they simply report more symptoms based on their tendency to catastrophize bodily sensations. METHODS: A total of 39 patients (19 with and 20 without PD) with physician-diagnosed asthma underwent standard metacholine challenge testing (MCT). Demographic and medical/asthma history information was collected at baseline. Pre and post MCT patients completed the Panic symptom scale (PSS), the Modified Borg Scale (MBS), and the Subjective distress visual analogue scale (SD-VAS). Heart rate (HR), systolic, and diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP) were recorded pre, during, and post MCT. RESULTS: There were no differences in PC20 values between asthmatics with and without PD (F=0.21, p=0.652). PD patients had a higher number of panic symptoms (from the PSS) at post-test compared to those without PD ([M (SD)] PD pre = 2.21 (2.42), PD post = 5.00 (3.32); non-PD pre = 0.75 (1.07), non-PD post = 2.25 (1.89): F=5.05, p=0.031). There were no differences in MBS (F=0.70, p=0.407), SD-VAS anxiety (F=0.36, p=0.554), SD-VAS worry (F=0.84, p=0.366), HR (F=0.06, p=0.805), SBP (F=0.49, p=0.487), or DBP (F=0.01, p=0.942) between PD and non-PD patients. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that having PD is associated with increased subjective responses during MCT, with no impact on objective measures of asthma. Future research should focus on the potential impact of these increased panic attack-like symptoms on long-term asthma care and if intervening on them influences outcomes such as emergency room visits. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is known as a skin disease; however, T cell immunopathology found in blood is associated with its severity. Skin Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and associated host–pathogen dynamics are important to chronic T helper 2 (Th2)-dominated inflammation in AD, yet they remain poorly understood. This study sought to investigate the effects of S. aureus-derived molecules and skin alarmins on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, specifically testing Th2-type cells, cytokines, and chemokines known to be associated with AD. We first show that six significantly elevated Th2-related chemokine biomarkers distinguish blood from adult AD patients compared to healthy controls ex vivo; in addition, TARC/CCL17, LDH, and PDGF-AA/AB correlated significantly with disease severity. We then demonstrate that these robust AD-associated biomarkers, as well as associated type 2 T cell functions, are readily reproduced from healthy blood mononuclear cells exposed to the alarmin TSLP and the S. aureus superantigen SEB in a human in vitro model, including IL-13, IL-5, and TARC secretion as well as OX-40-expressing activated memory T cells. We further show that the agonism of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein (NOD)2 inhibits this IL-13 secretion and memory Th2 and Tc2 cell functional activation while inducing significantly increased pSTAT3 and IL-6, both critical for Th17 cell responses. These findings identify NOD2 as a potential regulator of type 2 immune responses in humans and highlight its role as an endogenous inhibitor of pathogenic IL-13 that may open avenues for its therapeutic targeting in AD.
