A new electrode catalyst prepared using methane gas by microwave-assisted catalytic decomposition has been developed. The prepared catalyst has a graphene-covered nickel particle (GCNP) structure. GCNPs were fabricated as a powder microelectrode. Oxygen reduction activity was evaluated using an electrochemical potential sweep method. This activity was evaluated by comparing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the GCNP and commercially available Pt/C. The ORR at the GCNP was found to be similar to that of Pt/C in neutral solution. In acidic solution, the GCNP exhibited higher corrosion resistance than a nickel particle. The result was due to the prepared graphene.
Background: Children who survive traffic accidents, and their parents, may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or related symptoms (depression or anxiety), which can hinder the children's development and the parents' ability to provide effective care. In Japan, the PTSD incidence rate following traffic accidents and its related factors remain unclarified. Method: Participants were 79 children and 104 parents. The children were aged 3-18 years when injured. From August-December 2015, participants completed a self-reported questionnaire survey that comprised the 15-item Post-traumatic Stress Symptoms for Children and the Japanese version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised. The children's Injury Severity Score (ISS) was also obtained from their medical records. Correlations, analyses of variance, and multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results: Among the children and the parents, 10.2% and 22.1% were deemed to be at high risk of PTSD, respectively. Their stress scores were significantly positively correlated with each other and negatively correlated with children's age at the time of the accident. Parents who witnessed their children's accidents and those whose children were hospitalized were more stressed. Neither the children's nor the parents' risk for PTSD was associated with the ISS and the amount of time since the accident. 4 Conclusions: A system that simultaneously works with children and parents, to support both parties' psychological recovery is required. To ensure psychological care post-injury, it is necessary to evaluate PTSD risk, regardless of injury severity. Implementing preventive and early interventions can prove more valuable than awaiting natural recovery.
Background and study aims: Sedation impairs full visualization
of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) and Z line (the squamocolumnar junction) during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). The aim of this study was to determine whether induction of esophageal peristalsis could improve the ability to evaluate the Z line in children and adolescents.
Patients and methods: Study 1: Consecutive patients (10-15 years) undergoing EGD with propofol or midazolam sedation were enrolled. The proportion of Z line observed was compared between the two groups. Study 2: The effect of an air infusion near the EGJ following deflation of the stomach to induce esophageal peristalsis was investigated in the patients (15-18 years), undergoing EGD with propofol sedation. The proportion of Z line observed was compared between the stimulated group and control group.
Results: Study 1: 149 patients were evaluated; 87 received propofol (43 boys; average age 13.2 years (range, 10-15)) and 62 received midazolam (30 boys; average age 12.8 years (range, 10-15)). The proportion of the Z line visualized was low but was greater with propofol vs. midazolam sedation (36.8% vs 16.1%, P=0.0059). Study 2: 102 patients were evaluated; 62 had induction of peristalsis (34 boys; average age 16.2 years (range, 15-18)) and 40 controls (20 boys; average age 16.8 years (range, 15-18)). Complete visualization of the Z line achieved in 95% (59 of 62) following induction of peristalsis vs. 37.5% (15 of 40) of controls (P<0.001).
Conclusions: Induction of esophageal peristalsis greatly improved visualization of the Z line during sedated EGD in children and adolescents.
