Luce Irigaray is the foremost political theorist of sexual difference, which she identifies as the most basic and universal form of alterity. Irigaray (1994, 2000, 2004) advocates the development of a feminine culture and subjectivity, accompanied by specific political rights based on a positive definition of women as women (not as gender‐neutral citizens), including a right to virginity, freedom from pornography and exploitative advertising, and motherhood. Only a recognition of and respect for difference, the creation of a culture of two subjects, and the resulting “peaceful revolution” will allow us to build a truly democratic global society and to check modern forms of destruction such as the degradation of nature (including our own) and materialism.
