As public libraries are often considered levellers for the community, how are they addressing the needs of persons with disabilities in Ontario? Purpose Fanfiction communities are actively engaged in creating cultural products. These large online communities have created and developed conventions that guide their solutions to gathering and presenting their work. The purpose of this paper is to investigate those conventions looking for evidence of information-related pursuits as serious leisure (SL) (Stebbins, 2007). Design/methodology/approach A diverse collection of fanfiction publishing platforms, blogs, and associated websites were subject to a qualitative inductive analysis (Lincoln and Guba, 1985). Platforms included both generalist sites like Archive of Our Own and more focused sites such as Teen Wolf Fic Finder. Findings Findings show significant information-related activities around collecting, wayfinding, and organizing. Collecting centers on platform policies focused on scope. Wayfinding relates to peer review as well as various reference-like work including reader’s advisory, reference questioning, and the creation of pathfinders. Organizing looks to the unique organizational schema created and used by the fanfiction communities. Research limitations/implications The authors explore implications of these activities in reference to the fanfiction community and the library and information science (LIS) discipline. The fanfiction community is shifting out of an ephemeral existence and into one of a more permanent digital heritage. Fanfiction is an SL pursuit that also has much to offer for consideration to the LIS discipline. Practical implications With respect to the wayfinding and organizing conventions of fanfiction communities, these activities provide librarianship with the opportunity to consider traditional activities in new ways. Originality/value Fanfiction is a little studied phenomenon in SL and in LIS. This research provides connections to both areas.
To establish a role for insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in bladder cancer susceptibility, we tested the effect of p-cresidine, a potent bladder carcinogen, in transgenic (TG) mice with human IGF-1 expression in the bladder driven by the bovine keratin 5 promoter (referred to as BK5.IGF-1 TG mice). Indomethacin was also tested to determine if the cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway is a target for bladder cancer prevention in this model. Thirty-three female BK5.IGF-1 TG mice and 29 female nontransgenic littermates were randomized to the following treatments: (1) AIN-76A diet; (2) AIN-76A diet with 0.5% p-cresidine; or (3) AIN-76A diet with 0.5% p-cresidine + 0.00075% indomethacin. BK5.IGF-1 TG mice, with twofold greater total serum IGF-1 than nontransgenic mice, exhibited greatly increased susceptibility to p-cresidine-induced bladder tumors compared to nontransgenic mice. The most common type of bladder tumor in the BK5.IGF-1 TG mice was transitional cell carcinoma, which is the predominant type of bladder cancer observed in developed countries. Indomethacin inhibition of bladder tumor development in BK5.IGF-1 TG mice was not statistically significant. These results present further evidence for the role of IGF-1 in bladder cancer progression. In addition, these transgenic mice provide a useful model for studying the role of the IGF-1 pathway in bladder carcinogenesis and its prevention.
Purpose – This research seeks to discover the type of discourse encouraged around controversial materials, particularly those of a sexual nature, in LIS educational texts. Censorship and controversial materials are often issues addressed in the LIS literature, but even with ideals of neutrality it can be difficult to remain balanced on certain issues, particularly those dealing with sex. Design/methodology/approach – A content analysis of 85 LIS texts on collection development, reference, and intellectual freedom was completed using the following thematic elements: sex, pornography, erotica, curiosa, facetiae, obscenity, censorship, and controversial materials. Deeper analysis of individual definitions and usages was informed by Michel Foucault's perspective that education “follows the well-trodden battle lines of social conflict. Every educational system is a political means of maintaining or of modifying the appropriation of discourse” (Foucault, 1972, p. 227). Findings – Findings from the investigation indicate that LIS texts are predominately pejorative when discussing sexual topics such as erotica and pornography. Few texts provide distinctions between different types or genres of sexual materials. Research limitations/implications – The majority of texts analyzed for this study were published in the USA and hence have an American bias. This bias necessitated the use of American legal terminology and a reliance on American Library Association guidelines for examination purposes. The emphasis on American terminology may limit the applicability of the results outside of North America. Originality/value – Sex is one of the most highly cited reasons for challenges to materials in libraries. At the same time the mainstream popularity of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has created a new, widespread interest in the publishing, reading, and collecting of erotica. An understanding of how these texts are defined and identified in the LIS literature provides greater understanding of the discipline's biases.
