The North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment (NAWDEX) explored the impact of diabatic processes on disturbances of the jet stream and their influence on downstream high-impact weather through the deployment of four research aircraft, each with a sophisticated set of remote sensing and in situ instruments, and coordinated with a suite of ground-based measurements. A total of 49 research flights were performed, including, for the first time, coordinated flights of the four aircraft: the German High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO), the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) Dassault Falcon 20, the French Service des Avions Français Instrumentés pour la Recherche en Environnement (SAFIRE) Falcon 20, and the British Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) BAe 146. The observation period from 17 September to 22 October 2016 with frequently occurring extratropical and tropical cyclones was ideal for investigating midlatitude weather over the North Atlantic. NAWDEX featured three sequences of upstream triggers of waveguide disturbances, as well as their dynamic interaction with the jet stream, subsequent development, and eventual downstream weather impact on Europe. Examples are presented to highlight the wealth of phenomena that were sampled, the comprehensive coverage, and the multifaceted nature of the measurements. This unique dataset forms the basis for future case studies and detailed evaluations of weather and climate predictions to improve our understanding of diabatic influences on Rossby waves and the downstream impacts of weather systems affecting Europe.
Warm conveyor belts (WCBs) are important Lagrangian features in extratropical cyclones for the evolution of clouds, precipitation and flow dynamics. According to the classical concept, WCBs rise continuously from the boundary layer to the upper troposphere with ascent rates of less than 50 hPa/hr. Recent studies identified embedded convection in WCBs with ascent rates exceeding 50 hPa/hr, however, its significance and characteristics have not yet been analysed systematically. This study presents a detailed analysis of a frontal wave cyclone that occurred during the North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment (NAWDEX) and investigates the occurrence of convection with ascent rates exceeding 100–200 hPa/hr embedded in the WCB. A set of diagnostics, based on the combination of Meteosat products, ECMWF data, and a convection‐permitting simulation, reveals consistently that convection occurs frequently in the warm sector of the investigated cyclone, in particular in the region of the WCB. These convective regions are characterized by increased surface precipitation, low values of convective available potential energy, and significant large‐scale forcing for ascent, indicating that this type of convection embedded in WCBs differs from classical air mass convection with higher vertical velocities. This is qualitatively confirmed by airborne radar observations of the considered cyclone with reflectivities hardly exceeding 30 dBZ. In the investigated WCB, the ascent is not continuous, but characterized by intermittent periods of very strong or even convective ascent and occasionally by short periods of descent. Together, these results provide a refined view on the concept of WCBs and its embedded convection.
A configuration of the High-Altitude Long-Range Research Aircraft (HALO) as a remote sensing cloud observatory is described, and its use is illustrated with results from the first and second Next-Generation Aircraft Remote Sensing for Validation (NARVAL) field studies. Measurements from the second NARVAL (NARVAL2) are used to highlight the ability of HALO, when configured in this fashion, to characterize not only the distribution of water condensate in the atmosphere, but also its impact on radiant energy transfer and the covarying large-scale meteorological conditions—including the large-scale velocity field and its vertical component. The NARVAL campaigns with HALO demonstrate the potential of airborne cloud observatories to address long-standing riddles in studies of the coupling between clouds and circulation and are helping to motivate a new generation of field studies.
Abstract. As part of the EUREC4A field campaign which took place over the tropical North Atlantic during January–February 2020, 1215 dropsondes from the HALO and WP-3D aircraft were deployed through 26 flights to characterize the thermodynamic and dynamic environment of clouds in the trade-wind regions. We present JOANNE (Joint dropsonde Observations of the Atmosphere in tropical North atlaNtic meso-scale Environments), the dataset that contains these dropsonde measurements and the products derived from them. Along with the raw measurement profiles and basic post-processing of pressure, temperature, relative humidity and horizontal winds, the dataset also includes a homogenized and gridded dataset with 10 m vertical spacing. The gridded data are used as a basis for deriving diagnostics of the area-averaged mesoscale circulation properties such as divergence, vorticity, vertical velocity and gradient terms, making use of sondes dropped at regular intervals along a circular flight path. A total of 85 such circles, ∼ 222 km in diameter, were flown during EUREC4A. We describe the sampling strategy for dropsonde measurements during EUREC4A, the quality control for the data, the methods of estimation of additional products from the measurements and the different post-processed levels of the dataset.
