This study highlights the importance of diabatic processes for the complex interaction of weather systems in the North Atlantic-European sector during the week of 7-14 September 2008. A chain of events occurred including the extratropical transition (ET) of hurricane Hanna, a subsequently developing extratropical cyclone, the formation of an upper-level potential vorticity (PV) streamer that protruded towards Europe and triggered intense rainfall, and the genesis of a Mediterranean cyclone. A PV perspective is adopted along with trajectory calculations to elucidate the diabatic modification of the midlatitude flow.Important diabatic PV modifications occurred at upper levels, associated with the cross-isentropic transport of low-PV air within warm conveyor belts (WCBs). These were diagnosed during the ET of Hanna and the development of the extratropical cyclone near Newfoundland. The WCBs contributed to the amplification of ridges downstream of each cyclone and to the subsequent elongation of Hanna's upstream trough into a PV streamer. This streamer eventually triggered the Mediterranean cyclogenesis. The second major effect of the diabatic processes occurred on smaller scales, in the low and middle troposphere. The remnants of Hanna's tropical PV core advected moist air towards the baroclinic zone leading to condensational PV production in the lower troposphere. In contrast, in the case of the extratropical cyclone, diabatic PV production occurred within its WCB at mid levels. These diagnostic analyses corroborate the potential of diabatic processes associated with extratropical flow systems for the modification of both the low-level vortices and the upper-level Rossby wave guide.
The North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment (NAWDEX) explored the impact of diabatic processes on disturbances of the jet stream and their influence on downstream high-impact weather through the deployment of four research aircraft, each with a sophisticated set of remote sensing and in situ instruments, and coordinated with a suite of ground-based measurements. A total of 49 research flights were performed, including, for the first time, coordinated flights of the four aircraft: the German High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO), the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) Dassault Falcon 20, the French Service des Avions Français Instrumentés pour la Recherche en Environnement (SAFIRE) Falcon 20, and the British Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) BAe 146. The observation period from 17 September to 22 October 2016 with frequently occurring extratropical and tropical cyclones was ideal for investigating midlatitude weather over the North Atlantic. NAWDEX featured three sequences of upstream triggers of waveguide disturbances, as well as their dynamic interaction with the jet stream, subsequent development, and eventual downstream weather impact on Europe. Examples are presented to highlight the wealth of phenomena that were sampled, the comprehensive coverage, and the multifaceted nature of the measurements. This unique dataset forms the basis for future case studies and detailed evaluations of weather and climate predictions to improve our understanding of diabatic influences on Rossby waves and the downstream impacts of weather systems affecting Europe.
Warm conveyor belts (WCBs) are important Lagrangian features in extratropical cyclones for the evolution of clouds, precipitation and flow dynamics. According to the classical concept, WCBs rise continuously from the boundary layer to the upper troposphere with ascent rates of less than 50 hPa/hr. Recent studies identified embedded convection in WCBs with ascent rates exceeding 50 hPa/hr, however, its significance and characteristics have not yet been analysed systematically. This study presents a detailed analysis of a frontal wave cyclone that occurred during the North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment (NAWDEX) and investigates the occurrence of convection with ascent rates exceeding 100–200 hPa/hr embedded in the WCB. A set of diagnostics, based on the combination of Meteosat products, ECMWF data, and a convection‐permitting simulation, reveals consistently that convection occurs frequently in the warm sector of the investigated cyclone, in particular in the region of the WCB. These convective regions are characterized by increased surface precipitation, low values of convective available potential energy, and significant large‐scale forcing for ascent, indicating that this type of convection embedded in WCBs differs from classical air mass convection with higher vertical velocities. This is qualitatively confirmed by airborne radar observations of the considered cyclone with reflectivities hardly exceeding 30 dBZ. In the investigated WCB, the ascent is not continuous, but characterized by intermittent periods of very strong or even convective ascent and occasionally by short periods of descent. Together, these results provide a refined view on the concept of WCBs and its embedded convection.
The Midlatitude Cirrus experiment (ML-CIRRUS) deployed the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO) to obtain new insights into nucleation, life cycle, and climate impact of natural cirrus and aircraft-induced contrail cirrus. Direct observations of cirrus properties and their variability are still incomplete, currently limiting our understanding of the clouds’ impact on climate. Also, dynamical effects on clouds and feedbacks are not adequately represented in today’s weather prediction models. Here, we present the rationale, objectives, and selected scientific highlights of ML-CIRRUS using the G-550 aircraft of the German atmospheric science community. The first combined in situ–remote sensing cloud mission with HALO united state-of-the-art cloud probes, a lidar and novel ice residual, aerosol, trace gas, and radiation instrumentation. The aircraft observations were accompanied by remote sensing from satellite and ground and by numerical simulations. In spring 2014, HALO performed 16 flights above Europe with a focus on anthropogenic contrail cirrus and midlatitude cirrus induced by frontal systems including warm conveyor belts and other dynamical regimes (jet streams, mountain waves, and convection). Highlights from ML-CIRRUS include 1) new observations of microphysical and radiative cirrus properties and their variability in meteorological regimes typical for midlatitudes, 2) insights into occurrence of in situ–formed and lifted liquid-origin cirrus, 3) validation of cloud forecasts and satellite products, 4) assessment of contrail predictability, and 5) direct observations of contrail cirrus and their distinction from natural cirrus. Hence, ML-CIRRUS provides a comprehensive dataset on cirrus in the densely populated European midlatitudes with the scope to enhance our understanding of cirrus clouds and their role for climate and weather
