Using a mean-field approach we derive the scaling exponents for the molecular-weight dependence of the polymer dimensions and critical strain rates in dilute solutions of polymers undergoing a coil-stretching transition in elongational flows. While for @ solvents our predictions agree with existing theories, a new exponent for the critical strain rate is predicted in the good-solvent case. Our results are in satisfactory agreement with available experimental data.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
