This paper aims to clarify the characteristics of Remained-architecture with Munamochi-bashira in "The investigation report collections of early modern shrines-and-temples architecture". As a result of this study, it became obvious that there were two characteristics of Remainedarchitecture with Munamochi-bashira in shrines-and-temples architecture. For one thing, there were Remained-architecture in stylized buildings like Shinmei-style shrines, Taisha-style shrines, Zen-style Sikyakumon or Obaku-style Kirizuma-danchigai. For another thing, there were Remained-architecture in no stylized buildings like Hakkyakumon with Gable roof, Oratory of shrines, or Buildings peculiar to Okinawa. Above all, compared with the former, the latter proved to be a minority group.
This paper clarifies the architectural characteristics of the small structures with the Hottate-Munamochibashira structure found in Togakushi. As a result of our survey, we found that these nineteen Hottate-Munamochibashira-style structures were built by intermediate technicians who were not professional carpenters. The intermediate technicians used unprocessed materials such as forked branches or logs, which were easy to obtain and transport, while employing the Hottate-Munamochibashira structure that was easy to construct. In addition, the intermediate technicians did not learn the technology to build these Hottate-Munamochibashira-style structures by receiving special education or training, but by developing their own ingenuity and creativity naturally.Nagano Municipal Office, Dr.Eng.Designer,
In the past, several researchers regarded such eight pillared gates with Munamochi-bashira structure as a part of the family of Zenshu-yo (traditional Zen-style architecture) four pillared gates. Their similarities include the gabled roof and the Munamochi-bashira located on the gable side wall. However, we have found several eight pillared gates in Yamanashi, which have the Munamochi-bashira inside the structure, not on the wall. Moreover, we also concludes that Munamochi-bashira inside the structure of eight pillared gates are adopted for the actual structural strength rather than the architectural style, after examining the construction of such eight pillared gates we have found.
