The concept of maternal gatekeeping has an very important position among factors that effect fatherhood. Maternal gatekeeping is a relatively new concept in the field, newer concept in our country and currently there is so many deficiencies in this area. Researchers studying on parenting intensely have begun to tending issues about how wives affect each other on practicing parenting. Fathers are impressed by various factors on practising parenting; mothers' characteristics have an important place among these factors. In case of being supperted by wife, fathers comfortably display their paternal behaviours and it is seen that fathers' competencies doesn't differ from mothers' competencies. Thus for fathers, in the matter of displaying parenting, getting involved in the life of their children, in brief, displaying father involvement, the concept of "maternal gatekeeping" confronts us as a concept to consider. Even though the concept of maternal gatekeeping is evaluated differentially (discouragement, encouragement, control etc.), constitutively this concept imports mothers' behaviours which limits father-child interaction and accessibility of fathers for children. However, this concept have been studying for last few years in our country and there is very few study on this subject. Thus it is thought that, this study will contribute crucially to literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate maternal gatekeeping behaviour of mothers who have children in primary school, to evaluate this behaviour by reports of mothers own and to reveal whether maternal gatekeeping is differentiated in terms of various demographic variables. The sample of this study consists of 173 mothers who is married, have 7-11 age children in primary school and volunteer to join this study. Demographic Information Form and Maternal Gatekeeping Scale for Primary School-Mother Form are used as a measurement tool in this study. Measurement tools are transmitted to mothers by the students in a primary school (by getting permission from the school to apply the forms). Mesaurement tools are also collected in the same way. As a result of analyses it is revealed whether maternal gatekeeping is differentiated according to gender of child, educational status of mother, educational status of husband (father), economic situation of family. Besides correlations between maternal gatekeeping and some variables such as age of mothers, age of fathers, age of children, total of education years of mothers, total of education years of fathers, number of children, total of marriage years, daily and weekly working hours of fathers, are examined. Results of analyses are evaluated on the basis of other results in the literature.
Involvement of father to their children's life, being interaction with children by fathers directly is very important for child development. It is established that fathers contribute to child development in all aspects (emotional, cognitive etc.), but studies regarding fathers are still insufficient in comparison to studies regarding mothers. However, increasing of studies regarding fathers in recent years provides to have more information about fathers. This study also aims to present shared activities with fathers of university students in the past. Thus what individuals aged 18 and older shares with their fathers, in which area of children's life fathers involve is investigated. Accordingly 71 university student were asked to report their shared activities with their fathers for 0-12 and 12-18 age range through semi-structured form. After removing data of students whose parents were decedent, divorced or estranged, content analysis is made with 58 data. Among shared activities with parents, only shared activities with fathers are presented in this study. According to the results, some participants reported that they have never shared activities with their father, some participants reported one or more than one shared activities. Results of this study is examined within the scope of relevant literature.
