We have investigated the molecular dynamics in the chiral smectic phases of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-4-( 1 -methylheptyloxy-carbony1)phenyl 4'-octyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate ((S)-MHPOBC), by means of the solidstate 3C NMR spectroscopy. The mobility of the spacer chain is almost constant through the temperahue range of the Smectic phases, whle that of the core part decreases with decreasing temperature. On the basis of the 13C NMR spectra, we speculate the model responsible for the molecular dynamics. In addition, we have tried to estimate the correlation time of the motion for the core part.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
