As the country shifts toward institutionalizing research-related activities for both basic and higher education, research productivity (RP) still exhibited low ratings, with most of the universities still developing their own research cultures. To keep up with this shift, the current paper aimed to provide an assessment of the current research characteristics (i.e., research self-efficacy, research attitudes, and research interests) of faculty members in a private university in Bacoor, Cavite. Focusing on a relatively small scale of faculty members (n= 49), the investigation tried to compare the faculty’s demographic profile and research characteristics to further understand the overall university faculty research productivity. The findings revealed that they have an above-average confidence level with their research skills, have a somewhat positive view of research, and are likely to be interested in doing research. The study found no significant differences among the participants' research characteristics when grouped according to their gender and educational attainment using Mann-Whitney U tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests. However, there is a significant difference in the research attitudes among different age groups. Results have provided an objective assessment of the current research characteristics of university faculty members that may inform potential research training programs.
Improving the implementation of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program in the Senior High School (SHS), curriculum evaluation is essential. It is a planned process of change that leads to effectiveness of program delivery and student’s learning experience. This qualitative descriptive research analyzed the graduate perspectives on the delivery of the STEM strand in a private university in the Philippines. Graduates (n=11) who obtained academic distinctions, and currently taking STEM-related courses in autonomous universities were purposively selected. The participants were interviewed using a validated pre-structured interview using Zoom/Google Meet platform. Recorded responses were individually transcribed and returned to participants for final edit and validation. All the participants enrolled in the STEM strand because they wanted to pursue STEM-related courses in college. The research found out that the implementation of the university STEM program has its strengths and weaknesses. It was revealed that the program provides a range of learning activities and experiences for students that hone their academic and character development. The program, however, needs to offer more opportunities to improve students’ practical skills through investing in laboratory facilities and equipment. To further improve the program, the study proposes a more specialized and skill-based approach in the delivery of the STEM curriculum
In a neoliberal globalized institution, research productivity (RP) among faculty members has become an important aspect determining university rankings and academic performance. Coping with the demands of RP, many universities aim to improve their faculty’s scholarly academic repertoire through incentivizing research publications and providing research training programs. Drawing from sociological perspectives, this systematic review outlines the factors and consequences of research productivity as a capital in the context of Philippine academics. Based on the review, one glaring issue is the low RP of the country compared to its ASEAN and Western counterparts across both soft and hard sciences. Using Bourdieu’s theory on capital, the constant accumulation of faculty members for RP as capital has resulted in their struggle for legitimization in their professions and overcoming the paradox of national policies and institutional policies. Moreover, the review revealed additional pressure for faculty members to keep up with the demands of national policies requiring scholarly outputs while struggling to handle various institutional practices that can be restrictive towards research works.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
