and was the father of two children. After his graduation in medicine at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto in October 1973 and completing general residency at the Hospital de S. João in Oporto, Dr. Guimarães became a member of the Ordem dos Médicos (General Medical Council) on 22 October 1974. In March 1977 he began his voluntary residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery with the Ordem dos Médicos under the guidance of Flávio Guimarães. He took the National Examination for Access to the Speciality in 1978, obtaining a score of 88%, which allowed him to choose a place in plastic and reconstructive surgery residency in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital de S. João in Porto. After 2 years of training in this Department, he went to Bordeaux, France, where he worked for 1 year as an "Attaché a Titre Étranger" in the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Esthetic Surgery and in the Department of Surgery of the Hand at the Hôpital de Saint-André under the guidance of Jacques Baudet. He obtained the Universitary Diploma of Microsurgery from the University of Bordeaux. He passed the final examination for plastic and reconstructive surgery residency in July 1981 in Oporto, obtaining the classification of "excellent." In February 1982, following a national selection process, he became a Consultant in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital de S. João. He passed the Specialty Examination in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Ordem dos Médicos in July 1982 with "unanimity and eminence" (quality recognition certificate).
