The groundwater samples were clustered into four groups. The clustering of the samples led to the finding that streamflows play a significant role in the hydrological balance as a source of local recharge to the aquifer.
In this research, vegetation indices (VIs) were analyzed as indicators of the spatio-temporal variation of vegetation in a semi-arid region. For a better understanding of this dynamic, interactions between vegetation and climate should be studied more widely. To this end, the following methodology was proposed: (1) acquire the NDVI, EVI, SAVI, MSAVI, and NDMI by classification of vegetation and land cover categories in a monthly period from 2014 to 2018; (2) perform a geostatistical analysis of rainfall and temperature; and (3) assess the application of ordinary and uncertainty least squares linear regression models to experimental data from the response of vegetation indices to climatic variables through the BiDASys (bivariate data analysis system) program. The proposed methodology was tested in a semi-arid region of Zacatecas, Mexico. It was found that besides the high values in the indices that indicate good health, the climatic variables that have an impact on the study area should be considered given the close relationship with the vegetation. A better correlation of the NDMI and EVI with rainfall and temperature was found, and similarly, the relationship between VIs and climatic factors showed a general time lag effect. This methodology can be considered in management and conservation plans of natural ecosystems, in the context of climate change and sustainable development policies.
This paper presents a new methodology for the optimal design of space-time hydraulic head monitoring networks and its application to the Valle de Querétaro aquifer in Mexico. The selection of the space-time monitoring points is done using a static Kalman filter combined with a sequential optimization method. The Kalman filter requires as input a space-time covariance matrix, which is derived from a geostatistical analysis. A sequential optimization method that selects the space-time point that minimizes a function of the variance, in each step, is used. We demonstrate the methodology applying it to the redesign of the hydraulic head monitoring network of the Valle de Querétaro aquifer with the objective of selecting from a set of monitoring positions and times, those that minimize the spatiotemporal redundancy. The database for the geostatistical space-time analysis corresponds to information of 273 wells located within the aquifer for the period 1970-2007. A total of 1,435 hydraulic head data were used to construct the experimental space-time variogram. The results show that from the existing monitoring program that consists of 418 space-time monitoring points, only 178 are not redundant. The implied reduction of monitoring costs was possible because the proposed method is successful in propagating information in space and time.
Triangular weirs are commonly used for the measurement of discharge in open channel flow, representing an inexpensive, reliable methodology for the monitoring of water allocation. In this work, a low-speed photographic technique was used to characterize the upper and lower nappe profiles of flow over fully aerated triangular weirs. A total of 112 experiments were performed covering a range of weir vertex angles (from 30º to 90º), crest elevations (8 or 10 cm) and discharges (0.01-7.82 l s-1). The experimental nappe profiles were mathematically modeled and combined with elements of freevortex theory to derive a predictive equation for the weir discharge coefficient. Comparisons were established between measured Cd, the proposed discharge coefficient equation and discharge coefficient equations identified in the literature. The proposed equation can predict C d with a Mean Estimation Error (MEE) of 0.001, a Root
