An epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) began in Foshan municipality, Guangdong Province, China, in November 2002. We studied SARS case reports through April 30, 2003, including data from case investigations and a case series analysis of index cases. A total of 1,454 clinically confirmed cases (and 55 deaths) occurred; the epidemic peak was in the first week of February 2003. Healthcare workers accounted for 24% of cases. Clinical signs and symptoms differed between children (<18 years) and older persons (>65 years). Several observations support the hypothesis of a wild animal origin for SARS. Cases apparently occurred independently in at least five different municipalities; early case-patients were more likely than later patients to report living near a produce market (odds ratio undefined; lower 95% confidence interval 2.39) but not near a farm; and 9 (39%) of 23 early patients, including 6 who lived or worked in Foshan, were food handlers with probable animal contact.
At present, evidence-based clinical practice guideline (EBCPG) is the main mode of developing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) in the world, but in China, most of CPGs of Chinese medicine (CM) are still guidelines based on expert consensus. The objective of this study is to construct initially the methodology of developing EBCPGs of CM and to promote the development of standardization of CM. Based on the development of "Guideline for Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Pediatric Diseases in CM", the methodology of developing EBCPG of CM was explored by analyzing the pertinent literature and considering the characteristics of CM. In this study, the key problem was to put forward the suggestion and strategies. However, due to the methodology study of developing EBCPG of CM is still in the initial stage, there are still some problems which need further study.
The underlying mechanisms of methionine adenosyltransferase 2 A (MAT2A)-mediated cervical cancer progression under nutrient stress are largely elusive. Therefore, our study aims to investigate molecular mechanism by which MAT2A-indcued cervical oncogenesis. The interaction between MAT2A and programmed cell death protein 6 (PDCD6) in cervical cancer cell lines was detected by immunoprecipitation, immunoblotting and mass spectrometric analysis. A panel of inhibitors that are linked to stress responsive kinases were utilized to detect related pathways by immunoblotting. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were investigated by CCK-8 and flow cytometry. Apoptosis related protein level of Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3 was also analyzed in cells with PDCD6 K90 methylation mutation. The association between MAT2A and PDCD6 was detected by immunohistochemistry and clinicopathological characteristics were further analyzed. We found that the interaction between MAT2A and PDCD6 is mediated by AMPK activation and facilitates PDCD6 K90 methylation and further promotes protein stability of PDCD6. Physiologically, expression of PDCD6 K90R leads to increased apoptosis and thus suppresses growth of cervical cancer cells under glucose deprivation. Furthermore, the clinical analysis indicates that the MAT2A protein level is positively associated with the PDCD6 level, and the high level of PDCD6 significantly correlates with poor prognosis and advanced stages of cervical cancer patients. We conclude that MAT2A facilitates PDCD6 methylation to promote cervical cancer growth under glucose deprivation, suggesting the regulatory role of MAT2A in cellular response to nutrient stress and cervical cancer progression.
To investigate the association between widespread use of mifepristone in abortions and risk of uterine leiomyomas.We conducted a case-control study of 305 patients with uterine leiomyomas between January 2011 and July 2012; 311 women with ordinary vaginitis were selected as controls during the same period. Data were collected by questionnaires (including past history, life history, menstruation history, reproductive history, abortion history, the use of mifepristone, and uterine leiomyomas risk factors) and calculated by univariate and multivariate conditional logistic regression analyses; odds ratios and its 95% confidence interval were calculated to estimate the risk for uterine leiomyomas.Abortion with mifepristone was one of the risk factors for uterine leiomyomas, and the risk increased with increasing frequency of mifepristone use. Family history of uterine leiomyomas, body mass index, age at menarche, number of full-term delivery, and medical abortion history were also correlated with uterine leiomyomas.The use of mifepristone in abortion will increase the risk to develop uterine leiomyomas.
